Women's volleyball falls to Flyers at home

Coming off of two wins in the Ball State Tournament Sept. 9, Ball State Women’s Volleyball (8-1, 0-0) turned around and survived a five-set (25-22, 25-12, 25-23, 25-17, 17-15) thriller against Green Bay (5-4, 0-0) to be crowned tournament champions Sept. 10.
In their first home series of the 2022 season, Ball State Women’s Volleyball (7-1, 0-0) came out victorious in their Friday matches.
Following the conclusion of their historic season that included a Mid-American Conference (MAC) championship and a first NCAA Tournament win since 1995 in the 2021 season, Ball State Women’s Volleyball saw a transition period that included the departure of two assistant coaches, Tiffany Koors and Fritz Rosenberg, as well as four players.
Ball State Women’s Volleyball (5-1, 0-0) went 2-1 over three games in the Lipscomb Tournament with two wins Friday against Oklahoma (3-2, 0-0) and the host Bison (2-3, 0-0).
The Cardinals came away with a 3-2 win over Ohio in the quarterfinals of the Mid-American Conference Tournament Friday despite 66 kills by the Bobcats.
After 29 matches, Ball State Women’s Volleyball has cranked up its preparation for the Mid-American Conference Tournament this week, awaiting the winner of Northern Illinois and Ohio.
Ball State (20-8, 11-4 MAC) bounced back from last weekend’s losses with a sweep of Toledo (9-17, 4-11 MAC) Thursday. Sound defense led by junior Kate Avila resulted in the Cardinals’ first 20-win season since 2013.
Coming off consecutive losses, Ball State Women’s Volleyball will finish the road portion of its regular season in Toledo against the Rockets Thursday before returning home Saturday to complete the season against Akron.
Ball State Women’s Volleyball (19-8, 10-4 MAC) fell for the second straight night Saturday, this time on the road against Eastern Michigan (16-12, MAC 8-6).
It was a tough night for Ball State (19-7, 10-3 MAC) as it lost to Central Michigan (6-19, 3-10 MAC) 3-0, snapping another Cardinal three-game win streak.
An impressive defensive game granted Ball State Women’s Volleyball (19-6, 10-2 MAC) the win Saturday over Western Michigan (13-13, 3-9 MAC) in yet another sweep for the Cardinals.
In what turned out to be one of the closest matches of the year for Ball State (16-6, 7-2 MAC), the Cardinals came up shy against the Miami (OH) Redhawks (16-5, 8-1 MAC) in five sets Friday.
Ball State Women’s Volleyball (15-5, 6-1 MAC) came out victorious after a four-set match against Ohio (8-12, 3-4 MAC). Eleven aces and 19 kills from senior Ellie Dunn ultimately sealed the win for the Cardinals.
Ball State students had an extended weekend for fall break, but Cardinal athletics were in full effect. In case you missed any sporting events, here’s a weekend recap.
On the evening of Sept. 21 in Kalamazoo, junior Sydnee VanBeek deposited the final kill of the match to propel Ball State Women’s Volleyball into an already storied history. The team had just sealed its 900th program win. The victory was much more than redemption from Western Michigan ending their season last year. It was a history-making moment for the program.
As Ball State women’s volleyball wraps up regular season this weekend, they are directing their focus on transitioning into the Mid-American Conference tournament.
The Cardinals will wrap up their regular season schedule at home this weekend against Western Michigan (10-17, 5-9) at 7 p.m. Nov. 11 and against Northern Illinois (21-5, 13-1) at 7 p.m. Nov. 12.
It didn't take long for freshman Kate Avila to make her mark. In a win against Appalachian State on Sept. 10, the defensive specialist recorded 36 digs, the most of any Ball State women's volleyball player since Alyssa Rio’s 44 digs on Oct. 29, 2010, against Western Michigan.
Ball State Field hockey (4-4) went 0-2 this weekend in Iowa City, Iowa, losing against No. 15 Iowa (6-2), 1-4, and No. 4 Penn State (8-0), 0-7. The Cardinals got off to a good start against Iowa, taking the lead in the first half, 1-0, via a goal by senior midfielder Mikayla Mooney, her third of the season.
