Winter break didn’t mean an extended trip home for Ball State athletes. They still had games to play.
Down 11-8 in the third set, the Cardinals went on a 3-0 run to tie the match but weren’t able to ever regain the lead as Western Michigan defeated Ball State 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-17) to eliminate the Cardinals in the first round.
As Ball State women’s volleyball loaded onto the bus Nov. 16 outside of Worthen Arena, sophomore Brooklyn Goodsel had more to celebrate than leaving to compete in the Mid-American Conference tournament.
While the Cardinals were able to tie the set at 11, the comeback attempt fell just short as Northern Illinois went on a 4-1 run to close out the 3-2 win.
Tied 4-4 early in the fourth set, senior outside hitter Mackenzie Kitchel’s block at the net got the Ball State Cardinals fired up after losing the previous set 25-12. After that block, the Cardinals would never trail in the match again and went on runs of 6-0 and 7-0 to defeat Western Michigan 3-1 (25-21, 25-18, 12-25, 25-14).
As Ball State women’s volleyball wraps up regular season this weekend, they are directing their focus on transitioning into the Mid-American Conference tournament.

The three teams top the Mid-American Conference in digs per set, with Bowling Green leading the conference (16.88), followed by Miami (16.31), and Ball State (16.18).
