Students see fire trucks flying down McKinley almost every day, but the trucks seldom visit student homes. Four Ball State University students were not as lucky Wednesday night. Some time before 11 p.m. a fire started at the house they rent. It began in the chimney and spread to the attic.

Science and Humanities accepting nominations for women's award

Ball State University's College of Sciences and Humanities is seeking nominations for a statewide award for women. Anyone wanting to nominate a candidate for the 2009 Indiana Women of Achievement Awards has until May 20 to do so, according to a press release from the university.

MEN'S TENNIS: Undefeated Ball State battles undefeated Western Michigan for MAC lead

Ball State University and Western Michigan University will collide for sole possession of first place in the Mid-American Conference on Saturday at Cardinal Creek Tennis Center. They will unless Mother Nature has anything to say about it. The Ball State men's tennis team has played all of its home matches in the YMCA Tennis Center, an indoor facility, so far this season.

About 100 students and Muncie residents were at Cooper Physical Science Building Wednesday night to listen to Tahira Hira, professor of personal finance and consumer economics at Iowa State University.

TRACK AND FIELD: Cardinals continue outdoor season at Miami Invitational

The Ball State University track and field team will compete against 12 teams in its second meet of the outdoor season today at the Miami Invitational in Miami, Ohio. This past weekend Ball State went to the Mike Poehlein Invitational where the Cardinals turned in three first-place times on the score sheet.

MEN'S TENNIS: MAC's top teams meet in Muncie

It's been on the minds of all the players on the Ball State University men's tennis team since last April: take back the Mid-American Conference Championship from Western Michigan University. "We've had two years where we haven't won it," senior Jose Perdomo said in January.

Student charged in police bike theft

A Ball State University student arrested on suspicion of taking a police officer's bicycle for a joy ride was formally charged with theft Thursday, according to court documents. Gavin Howell was arrested early Sunday after finding Ball State Police Sgt. John Foster's police bike parked behind University Square, Gene Burton, director of public safety, said Monday.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: 11 players named to all-academic team

More than half of the players on the No. 15 Ball State University men's volleyball team received a conference honor Thursday. Eleven Cardinals were named to the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Academic All-Conference Team. To be eligible for the team, a player must have at least a 3.

39 units of blood drawn through drive

FIJI fraternity started the second annual Ride the Purple Valley event with a successful blood drive this week. Bryan John, Ride Across the Purple Valley chairman, said FIJI registered 42 people for the blood drive and drew 39 units of blood. John said he and co-coordinator David Townsend set a goal of 75 donors.

A new social networking site is sweeping the interwebs, much like Facebook and MySpace before it. This one goes by Twitter. Twitter, accessible from Twitter.com, is a microblogging site that allows users to post 140-character messages known as "tweets" to their profile page as well as follow their friends' tweets.

Children in the Muncie and Ball State University communities can hunt for eggs and meet the Easter Bunny today in the Quad. Samantha Maples, program director for University Program Board, said UPB's second annual Easter Extravaganza will have activities aimed at children but will also attract students.

Fraternity puts on show, inducts four members outside Atrium

Flanked by two tiki torches and dressed in suits and red masks, four new additions to the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity were unveiled Thursday night in front of the Atrium. Christopher McBride, Antwan Pratt, John Williams and Dayne Lewis were inducted into the fraternity in front of hundreds of students sitting in chairs and gathered around the fountains for "DINasty Takeover presents: The Four Side Step Show.

MITS public hearings result in more Riverside route trips

MITS is augmenting two of it routes to save money this summer. The board of directors held two public hearings, Wednesday and Thursday, to get community input on two new proposals. As a result of the meetings, an additional two trips have been added to the Riverside Avenue route at 6:15 p.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Ball State gets votes in final coaches' poll

The Ball State University women's basketball team received six votes in the final Division I USA Today Coaches' Poll, which was released today. The Cardinals received the ninth most votes of teams not in the top 25, which would put them at 34th in the poll.

Students' chimney, attic catch on fire

A house rented by four Ball State University students caught fire after 10:30 p.m. Wednesday. No one was harmed. The flames appeared to be contained to the attic and chimney of the house, located on the corner of Reserve Street and Beechwood Avenue. At the time of printing, the fire was being extinguished and police and firefighters were unable to release information about the extent of damage to the home.

GLBT issues, adoption, partner benefits to be focus of Senator Errington's speech

With the changes involving gay marriage occurring in state legislatures such as Vermont and Iowa, Continuum will present Indiana State Senator Sue Errington, who will address civil rights for the gay community. Errington will discuss legislative issues in the state house that target gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex community and also domestic partner benefits.
