FIELD HOCKEY: Cardinals look to improve after dreadful 2008 season

After a 2-17 season in 2008, the future looks bright for the Ball State University women's field hockey team in 2009. The teams' two seniors, Tiffany Shifflett and Brooke MacGillivary, will lead a combined 14 juniors and sophomores to make up a deep and experienced team.

CROSS COUNTRY: Coach says Ball State has good chance to win MAC title

After losing just one senior, Vanessa Gilbert, from last year's squad, the Ball State University cross country team is gearing up for another shot at the Mid-American Conference championship this fall. Placing 11th at last year's championship, the Cardinals are looking to rebound and put in a much better finish this year.

Ball State opens new study abroad program in Costa Rica

Ball State University's newest study abroad program, the Costa Rica Centre, is recruiting for the Spring Semester. Jim Coffin, director of the Rinker Center for International Programs, said the decision to start a center in Costa Rica stemmed from the university's existing centera programs in London and Australia, which are the most popular study abroad options.

FOOTBALL: Ball State's Lewis, Kent State's Jarvis vie to be best MAC running back

DETROIT - The Mid-American Conference is dominated by quarterbacks and has been for more than a decade. The phrase "quarterback league" was thrown around at MAC Media Day about as often as "we're taking it one game at a time," but for good reason. The list of signal callers to come out of the MAC in the last 10 years reads like an NFL draft board: Chad Pennington, Byron Leftwich, Charlie Frye, Ben Roethlisberger, Nate Davis, Dan LeFevour.

Ball State greeks create new logo, tagline for 2009-10 school year

As Ball State University's greek community celebrates the 90th year of greek life on campus, it will be making a few changes to some time-honored traditions. Cory Schneider, Interfraternity Council vice president of public relations, said a big change was made this year in the rebranding of the greek logo, colors and tagline.

Ball State student turns his home into art gallery

"If you want a good art scene, you have to just do it." Those words inspired senior studio art major Adam Huston to open his own nonprofit art gallery in his living room this past summer. The idea first came to him during the spring when artist Dina Sherman of Columbus, Ohio, came to speak at the Ball State.

Ball State students have options when purchasing textbooks

It's that time again. Time to fork over a substantial amount of cash or credit for textbooks and course materials. The three bookstores around Ball State are all thought of when needing to buy books. T.I.S. College Bookstore and CBX Bookstore are located in the Village and Ball State University Bookstore is located on the first floor of the Art and Journalism Building.

Student Center to reopen after year-long renovation

The newly renovated north entrance of the L.A. Pittenger Student Center and its new dining facility will reopen just in time for the beginning of the Fall Semester, after more than a year of construction. Greg Graham, interim director of facilities planning and management at Ball State University, said although most of the renovations to the almost 50-year-old building consisted of upgrading mechanical and electrical systems, there are also many visible changes.

Ball State spends $600,000 to create "green space" near Noyer

As the Fall Semester welcomes a new freshman class, Ball State University will also introduce a new recreational area for on-campus residents. The newly-renovated area of green space can be experienced between Noyer Complex and the surrounding residence halls on the east side of campus.

SOCCER: Ball State's 2 late goals secures win vs. Xavier in exhibition match

The Ball State University soccer team started its 2009 season with a 2-1 victory in an exhibition match against Xavier University on Monday. Two early second-half goals for the Cardinals helped the team take control of the match. The two teams used the first half to break themselves into the first game of the season.

Ball State begins to implement new Core Curriculum

Ball State University will issue a new mandatory University Core Curriculum in Fall 2010, but students may opt into the new system this year. After researching literature and practices of other universities, Ball State has decided to place more emphasis on analysis and critical thinking, Associate Provost Marilyn Buck said.

New minimum wage could mean few work hours for Ball State students

Ball State University students who are employed with on-campus jobs may work fewer hours this fall due to the increase in wages, a school official said. On July 24, Indiana's minimum wage increased from $6.55 to $7.25 per hour. This increase in minimum wage is the last installment from a bill passed by former president George W.

After a long day of shooting a film, a friend and I decided to catch the night's last screening of the film "(500) Days of Summer," a flick that has caught a lot of attention within the independent film community. It is a film about love, but not a romantic film.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Ball State hopes new off-season program will pay off

The Ball State University women's tennis team looks to make strides by improving from a 5-13 record last season. Cardinal coach Kathy Bull has her players going through a 12-week off-season conditioning program that she believes will improve her players' stamina and fitness that go into making it through a whole season.

Ball State president Gora reviews her 5 years at university, looks ahead to future

During five years as president of Ball State University, Jo Ann Gora has built a reputation of getting out to sell the university. When Gora came to Ball State five years ago, she told the Daily News that she wanted to make the university more distinctive. "Some of it, frankly, is sheer marketing," Gora said then. During her time here, the university has increased its profile across the state and the nation, a trend Gora said she wants to continue.
