CROSS COUNTRY: Cardinals' sweep first home meet in 13 years

The Ball State University cross country team got off to a fast start in their first meet of the season beating the visiting University of Indianapolis 15-50 at the Elks Country Club in Muncie. Ball State was led by the 2007 Mid-American Conference Championship runner-up Ali Bischel, who finished in first place overall in the meet.

An Island deserted

Muncie's only island was quiet on Sunday. Despite the planned art show that afternoon, there were only two people calmly enjoying smoothies at The Island Muncie. Owner Roger Conatser said this was how most of the art shows at the Island have turned out. "The artists are few and far between, really," Conatser said.

Inside the Cardinal football complex, today is football Wednesday. With the season opener against the University of North Texas on Thursday night, Ball State has to reorder their schedules which are normally designed with a Saturday game day in mind. One game into its season, the Ball State University field hockey team is already one win away from matching last season's win total. After finishing the 2008 season 2-17, Ball State defeated Davidson College 2-1 in its season opener on Saturday in North Carolina.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Libero Rio pulls hamstring, hopes to be back within one month

Ball State University libero Alyssa Rio pulled her left hamstring in the Cardinals' 3-0 Friday night loss to No. 19 Purdue University, the junior told The Ball State Daily News on Saturday night. Rio said she hopes to return to the lineup within a month. She is still awaiting to be evaluated by team doctors on campus to begin treatment.

One of the most well known shows in game show history was reenacted yet again at Emens Auditorium on Saturday. There were various prizes given away throughout the night ranging from a floor lamp to an Xbox 360. Some participants walked away with nothing but an LED Candle, while others walked away with futons.

Five bands, no cover and free pizza. People that were at Doc's Music Hall on Saturday night had a good time and were only asked one favor: to donate to the fund for the "Tipsy Trolley." Although the event only raised a little over $100, Michael Martin, owner of Doc's, said people became aware of the trolley's existence.

Accelerated online degree program to benefit non-traditional students

In the spring, Ball State University will begin offering accelerated online degree programs to accommodate the admission overflow to certain master's degree programs. This new program will target adult learners who may need to find a new degree or change careers, Nancy Prater, director of marketing and communication for distance education, said.

Students gathered in the L.A. Pittenger Student Center on Friday night for Ball State University's annual Quad Bash, one of the last Welcome Week activities. The event was moved from the Quad to the Student Center last minute after rain came through campus.

SOCCER: Ball State suffers 5-1 loss to Miami (Fla.) in opener

Junior midfielder Meg Mellott scored the Cardinals' first goal of the season in the 54th minute of the second half to bring the Cardinals within one goal at 2-1, but the Hurricanes' offensive attack proved too much. Miami would go on a 3-0 run to end the game to improve to 2-1-0.

FIELD HOCKEY: Cards hope chemistry built during offseason will pay off during season

After a 2-17 record last season, the Ball State University field hockey team feels more confident and has more experience, which it believes will be the deciding factor in improving the team as a whole. The players have become very close knit during the off season and that is something that head coach Annette Payne believes will keep the girls together throughout the regular season, she said.
