DeHority rededication ceremony highlights building's new features

Two weeks after students first moved in, DeHority Complex officially reopened during a ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday. Ball State President Jo Ann Gora cut the ribbon marking the official reopening of the complex at approximately 3:45 p.m. DeHority originally opened in 1960 as four all-women's halls.

BOOZERS AND LOSERS: Home gardens fun activity for college students

When The Beatles wrote "Strawberry Fields Forever," they must have imagined a plantation of the "Everbearing" or "Day Neutral" variety, since those are the two that produce more than one harvest in a season, thus making them last more like "forever." The other type, "June Bearing," yields one large harvest over a two- to three-week period in the spring.

Ball State professor says Gov. Daniels has résumé for bid at presidency in 2012

Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels could be on the short list of Republican hopefuls for the party's 2012 presidential nomination - even if he doesn't want to be. The two-term governor said his 2008 run for office would be his last and he's not interested in the "savagery" of a national campaign, according to the Associated Press.

Water duct upgrades planned for campus

Indiana American Water held a public hearing Monday at the Horizon Convention Center to discuss two improvement projects to be made to streets in Muncie this semester. Greg Gibson, construction manager for Indiana American Water, said during the meeting that the project consisted of replacing the 2-inch water duct main on North Street and University Avenue for 8-inch water ducts, which will supply a better flow to residents of the nearby neighborhoods.

FIELD HOCKEY: Jones named MAC Offensive Player of the Week

Junior forward Hannah Jones was named Mid-American Conference Offensive Player of the Week after helping the Ball State University field hockey team to an undefeated weekend. Jones combined to score three goals in wins against Davidson College and Appalachian State University.

Ball State students limited to printing 1,000 pages

Though Ball State University students are now limited on how many pages they can print at Bracken Library, most said they won't notice. At the beginning of the semester, a mass e-mail was sent informing students of the new 1,000-page printing limit that will start to be enforced this school year.

FOOTBALL: Coach says captains are epitome of Ball State football

The two Ball State football players who will walk to midfield Thursday night for the coin toss embody the type of player coach Stan Parrish wants. Defensive lineman Brandon Crawford and tight end Madaris Grant will serve as this year's captains after being unanimously elected by their teammates.

FOOTBALL: Students asked to red out game, fireworks planned after game

The Ball State University's opening football game Thursday against the University of North Texas is guaranteed to end with a bang. After the game, there will be a fireworks show. Prior to the game, the Ball State athletics department will be giving away free football posters and will recognize the women's volleyball team at halftime.

Satellite voting centers proposed for next year

Voters registered in Delaware County may find it a bit easier to vote in the next election. Delaware County Clerk Steve Craycraft, a Democrat, proposed establishing two satellite voting sites for the 2010 election at last week's meeting of the Delaware County Board of Elections.

CROSS COUNTRY: Cards host first meet in 13 years, sweep Greyhounds

In Ball State's first home cross country meet in 13 years, the Cardinals swept visiting Indianapolis 15-50 in Monday's dual meet at the Elks Country Club. With fans and friends cheering them to the finish line, the Cardinals used the energy of the crowd to take the top eight spots and the meet from the Greyhounds.

Inflation rates affect students, university budget

The minimum wage increase and national inflation rates have affected "little pockets" in students' budgets, as well as Ball State University's budget, one school official said. Some areas that have been affected recently at Ball State include student employment, cost of food in the dining halls and the cost of washing laundry on campus.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Libero expected to miss 3-4 weeks

The coaching staff and team doctors are being cautiously optimistic on the condition of starting libero Alyssa Rio. Rio, who was injured Friday night in the season opener against number 19 Purdue. Rio was injured when she planted to field a ball and her leg came out from underneath her.

SOCCER: Cardinals drop pair of matches in Florida

The Ball State University soccer team returns to campus after a weekend trip to Florida with two losses. The Cardinals opened their regular season last Friday against Miami in Coral Gables, Fla., and were defeated 5-1. Sunday, the team traveled to Boca Raton in a match against Florida Atlantic University and was defeated 3-0.

FIELD HOCKEY: Cards match 2008 win total after first weekend

Within one weekend, the Ball State University field hockey team found a way to match its season win total from the 2008 season by racking up back-to-back wins. Ball State began its weekend by defeating Davidson College 2-1 on Saturday in North Carolina. This is the second straight year that Ball State has defeated Davidson, a win that last season counted for one of Ball State's two wins.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cards drop all three matches, two players are injured

Chaos, confusion and worst case scenario. Not exactly the words any coach wants to use in the same sentence, but that's what coach Dave Boos and the Ball State University women's volleyball team lived over the weekend. Having travelled to West Lafayette to appear in the Premier Mortar Board Tournament, expectations were high for the Cardinals.

CROSS COUNTRY: Cardinals' sweep first home meet in 13 years

The Ball State University cross country team got off to a fast start in their first meet of the season beating the visiting University of Indianapolis 15-50 at the Elks Country Club in Muncie. Ball State was led by the 2007 Mid-American Conference Championship runner-up Ali Bischel, who finished in first place overall in the meet.
