Patience is said to be a virtue, and in the case of Ball State Soccer goalkeeper Alex DeRuvo, remaining patient has paid dividends. DeRuvo, who is entrenched in the Cardinals’ starting role for the first time since stepping on campus in 2018, has made the most of her opportunity.
Frankly, it’s getting ridiculous. The sheer number of injuries afflicting both the Indianapolis Colts and Indiana Pacers over the past five years is almost unrealistic.

Ball State defeated Army 28-16 Saturday evening. On the opening kickoff, redshirt fifth-year wide receiver Justin Hall took the kickoff back for a 99-yard touchdown return.
Ball State swept Ohio Friday evening, with head coach Kelli Miller Phillips attributing part of the win to the Cardinal’s well-balanced attack. Sophomore middle blocker Lauren Gilliland, graduate student outside hitter Emily Hollowell, junior middle blocker Marie Plitt and junior outside hitter Natalie Mitchem combined for 35 kills against the Bobcats.
The Cardinals had a bit of trouble on the offensive side of the field, shooting only six shots in the entire game. Miami, on the other hand, had a total of 16 shots with five hitting the back of the net.
While there is a 70.3-mile half Ironman Triathlon that takes place in Muncie annually, Muncie locals who wish to race in a full Ironman can also participate in the full 140.6-mile race Oct. 2.
The Cardinals endured ups and downs against Ohio, winning the first set, 25-19, before losing the next two sets 25-22 and 25-20. After winning the fourth set 25-20, the Cardinals needed an extra point to win the fifth set 16-14, winning the match in the process.
Buffalo took down Ball State 2-1 Thursday evening, giving the Cardinals their first Mid-American Conference loss of the season. The Cardinals started the game with a goal from senior midfielder Tatiana Mason in the sixth minute.
Steele went on to play for Center Grove High School in Greenwood, Indiana, which is when his football career started taking off. In 2020 — his senior year — Steele led the Trojans to a 14-0 season, helped Center Grove win the class 6A state title and was recognized as Indiana’s “Mr. Football” by the Indianapolis Star.

Ball State could not overcome its injuries along the offensive line in its 22-12 loss against Toledo Saturday afternoon. In their first Mid-American Conference game of the season, the Cardinals allowed four sacks to the Rockets.
