Ball State falls in four sets in season opener against Hawaii

Heading on the road to play the No. 1 ranked team in the nation is how Ball State Men’s Volleyball spent their opening night for the 2023 season. In a four-set match, the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors (1-0, 0-0) took down the Cardinals (0-1, 0-0) in what is now the fourth match between the two programs in the last calendar year, with Ball State winning the first two in Worthen Arena and the Rainbow Warriors winning the third match in the semifinal of the NCAA Men’s Volleyball tournament.

OPINION: Ball State has had the same logo since 1990; it's time for an update to the Cardinals identity

Originally named the Hoosieroons, the then-named Indiana State Normal School, Eastern Division changed its athletic identity to the Cardinals in 1927. Since then, the identity of Ball State’s athletic teams have evolved, culminating with the current athletic logo used since 1989, per a previous Daily News article. The logo replaced a logo that had been used for over 30 years, per Chris Creamer’s Sports Logo Website. This logo, affectionately called “Dancing Charlie,” was the symbol of Ball State athletics as the Cardinals became a Division I school in football and a mid-major powerhouse in men’s basketball.

Cardinals winning streak snapped as they pick up first conference loss

Poor passing. Poor court awareness. Bad shot selection. Miscommunications. “What are you doing? What are you doing?” rang on the court and could be heard through the broadcast. Head Coach Michael Lewis was at a loss for words on the sideline in Athens, Ohio. In what was a physical game, which is synonymous with Mid-American Conference (MAC) play, Ball State (11-5, 2-1 MAC) fell to Ohio (9-7, 1-2 MAC).

OPINION: What happens next for Damar Hamlin’s situation

If you ask anyone that plays football, most of them will tell you that injuries are an accepted consequence of playing the sport. And not just injuries like a rolled ankle. It’s injuries like a torn achilles, torn ACL or even concussions, all serious injuries, that players know are possible, and are willing to risk at the expense of pursuing their dreams. It’s accepted as the nature of the game, and it’s understood amongst the brotherhood of the NFL that these serious injuries could set them back. Some of the worst extremes of these accepted injuries amongst players have reared their ugly heads in Cincinnati, just as they did on Monday Night Football.

What the 12-team College Football Playoff would look like this season

According to NCAA.com, the six conference winners ranked highest by the committee will automatically make the playoff, with six more of the highest-ranked teams added (essentially at-large bids). The first-round games will be played throughout the week ending on Saturday, Dec 21. With the final rankings being released Dec. 4, the question has to be asked and with the CFP semifinals kicking off today, the question has to be asked: What would a 12-team playoff look like for this season based on the final rankings?
