Longacre rebuilds team culture in first year as head coach

In her first year as head coach, Christy Longacre led Ball State field hockey to its first Mid-American Conference Tournament since 2011, one season after the Cardinals lost all six of their conference games. But her biggest accomplishment might be returning a family culture back to the team.  Longacre won't take the credit, however, because that’s her style. Instead, she said the seniors were responsible.

Cardinals eliminated from MAC Tournament in shootout

Freshman defender Yela Zisweiler stepped up to the ball with Ball State soccer trailing Northern Illinois 4-3 in penalty kicks. Overtime ended with a 1-1 tie, forcing the shootout. Zisweiler needed to score to keep the game going. She ran up to the ball, launching it to the lower right corner of the goal, but Huskies goalkeeper MacKenzie Lee was ready for it. She dove to her left to block the kick. The Mid-American Conference regular season champions were eliminated -- again.

Ball State field hockey beats Central Michigan

The Cardinals are currently fourth in the MAC and hold the head-to-head tiebreaker over fifth-place Longwood (2-3 MAC, 8-8 overall), but if Longwood wins Oct. 29 and Ohio (3-2 MAC, 6-10 overall) loses, there will be a three-way tie for third place.

Football coaches using extra days off for recruiting

With a couple extra days before the Cardinals take on Western Michigan, several of the coaches hit the road early this week for recruiting. Since the team doesn't have a true bye week, head coach Mike Neu said this is the biggest week they've had to connect with recruits.

3 takeaways from women's basketball media day

Ball State women's basketball returns four starters in the 2016-17 season -- but won't return the program's all-time leading scorer. Nathalie Fontaine finished her Ball State career with a record 2,166 points and broke a number of season records, including points scored (660). She was also the only player in the Mid-American Conference to average more than 20 points (20.6) and 10 rebounds (10.2) per game. The Cardinals finished 22-10, making the Women's National Invitation Tournament for the fourth season in a row. Ball State will set its goals higher this year, looking to make the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2009, when the program, a 14-seed, upset 3-seed Tennessee in one of the biggest upsets of women's basketball history. Head coach Brady Sallee, senior guard Jill Morrison and junior forward Moriah Monaco were all at women's basketball media day to address how the team will move forward. Here are 3 takeaways from the press conference Oct.
