Muncie residents protest Bush's plan

Protestors against President Bush's new Iraq war plan were left out in the cold Thursday afternoon when a rally was met with few student participation. At a second rally later that night, however, organizers were able to draw a larger crowd from local Muncie residents.

Students to learn about diversity

From Staff Reports Diversity is a multifaceted concept that includes race, sex, age, background, sexual orientation and anything else that makes people unique, and Ball State organizations want to help students understand it. To do this, they are sponsoring Unity Week, with speakers, food sampling, interactive programs and a beauty pageant.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Road games offer challenges

In 14 games this season, the Ball State University women's basketball team (12-2) has experienced unprecedented success. The Cardinals are 3-0 in the Mid-American Conference after amassing their best non-conference record in the program's history with a 9-2 record, including two non-conference tournament titles.

TURNING A BLIND EYE: Holiday should mean more than "three-day weekend"

Next Monday is Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday. Dr. King, a Baptist minister and civil rights leader, dedicated his life to the promotion of equal rights for all people. He was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tenn., but King was perhaps the most influential leader of the civil rights movement.

BSU updates policy

Withdrawing from classes has become easier this semester for Ball State University students. Students will have only one 45-day period to withdraw, starting Tuesday. Although students no longer need an instructor's signature to withdraw, the university encourages students to discuss the decision with their instructors.

SWIMMING AND DIVING: Teams train in Florida

Mark Amones n Sports Editor For a week of training during Winter Break, the Ball State University men's and women's swimming and diving teams went to Fort Pierce, Fla. Co-coaches Laura Seibold-Caudill and Bob Thomas said the trip is used as a bonding experience for the team, a chance to get away from Muncie and to allow the team to practice against teams they wouldn't regularly compete against.

"The Terri Dreams" is not just a stage performance or a movie: It's both. This production, which showcases Ball State University students' writing, art and music, will make its premiere at 8 p.m. tonight in Sursa Performance Hall. "The Terri Dreams" combines filmed segments with live performances - a first for a Ball State production - to tell a story about one man's dreams of a woman.

TRACK AND FIELD: Ball State begins indoor season

After several seasons in an administrative role at Indiana University, Randy Heisler left to take the cross country and track and field coaching position at Ball State University. Heisler and his team debut today in the Ball State Open. "We're going to have to hit the ground running with the season being so close, but we're not going to put too much pressure on the [athletes] yet," Heisler said.

Only one place on campus exists where a chainsaw juggler, a magician and a student mentalist can be found in the same building on the same night. That's right, it's a new semester, and Late Nite is back in full swing debuting with a circus theme Saturday night.

OUR VIEW: Responsibility ... not quite yet

Ball State University now has one official withdrawal period for all classes, which replaces the confusing and sometimes grade-damaging policies of the past. Before, students were at the mercy of professors if they missed the first withdrawal period. A signature was required and the professors had the option of assigning a "W" or an "F" for the class.

This year's Miss Ball State pageant has 24 contestants and consists of an interview before the stage competition and different categories such as swimsuit and evening wear contests, an on-stage question and the talent portion of the contest.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Coach, team winless in MAC

From Staff Reports Ball State's men's basketball team is off to one of the worst starts in school history. Only twice in the program's history have the Cardinals had a worse record after fifteen games than 4-11 (0-2 in the Mid-American Conference). In 1970-71 and 1983-84 the Cardinals had a record of 3-12 at this point, the two worst starts for Cardinal programs in history.

Foreign students adjust to BSU

Mohammed Al-Rasheed and his brother, both freshmen, have never seen snow. When they decided to come to Ball State University from Kuwait, both bought winter jackets. "I want to build a snowman and to do the angels," Al-Rasheed said. Being from Kuwait, Al-Rasheed is used to being more active outside than his American college counterparts.

Services for Louis E. Ingelhart have been scheduled. Visitation will be 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday , Jan. 10 at The Meeks Mortuary, 415 E. Washington St., Muncie. Funeral service will take place at 1 p.m. Thursday at Hazelwood Christian Church, 1400 W. University, Muncie.

Louis E. Ingelhart leaves behind legacy

The 45 words of the First Amendment were his greatest love, but defending their purpose was Louis E. Ingelhart's greatest passion. Ingelhart arrived at Ball State University in hope of fostering support for the outspoken at the edge of an era when Sen. Joseph McCarthy was championing the hunt for "communists" and battling the likes of Edward R. Murrow. The United States was shaken to its core by fear. Silence enveloped the nation. Ingelhart, meanwhile, focused on building an academic environment where the only fear was that of not speaking loudly enough.

Wing-Out's future uncertain

Wing-Out restaurant in the Village remains closed amid complaints from employees about problems including missing paychecks, unpaid vendors and an unreachable owner. Owner Gary James, however, said many of these accusations are untrue. A sign posted in the restaurant's door says it will reopen after Christmas, but 17 days after the holiday and four days into the school year, employees said they are unsure whether they still have their jobs.
