Ticket numbers on decline

Anytime that students, visitors, faculty or staff park for longer than their metered time, park in a spot reserved for someone else or choose not to pay a ticket within a certain amount of time, Ball State University's Parking Services gets involved. Nancy Wray, Parking Services office manager, said Parking Service employees write about 20,000 tickets per semester, but that number is lower than in the past.

After 71 years, millions of yards and hundreds of races, still swimming strong

The starting tone echoed through a sparsely populated Lewellen Aquatic Center as six swimmers released the starting blocks. A few observers on the deck pointed to lane one and noticed that David Costill was swimming in an unconventional manner. Instead of alternating arms during the backstroke, Costill uses both arms moving simultaneously to propel himself through the water.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Defense leads Cardinals to win

During Ball State University's winning streak, which now spans 10 games, the club's offense has received the bulk of the glory. Tuesday it was the Cardinals' defense that led them to a 71-49 victory over the University of Akron. Ball State struggled with its shooting in the first half, connecting on 11 of 31 (35 percent) of its shots from the field.

Students to sign up for volunteer work

Ball State Student Voluntary Services will have its spring Volunteer Recruitment Fair Wednesday morning in the L.A. PIttenger Student Center Ballroom. Graduate Assistant Amanda Robinson said there are plenty of opportunities for students to volunteer, and the recruitment fair is a good place to start.

Carmichael Circle gets some green

Instead of sitting on hard concrete benches outside Carmichael Hall, next fall students can curl up on wooden benches surrounded by flowers to study and talk with friends. Personalized bricks will go from the building doors to Carmichael Circle, which is in front of the hall.

Walking around Ball State University, it's easy to take for granted the beauty this campus radiates. It's easier for juniors and seniors to recall walking across an uneven and gray McKinley Avenue. Muncie resident dies after crash

Muncie resident Ruth Matson died at 8:19 p.m. Monday after a car accident at Jackson Street and Tillotson Avenue. Matson turned in front of Joseph Allart III, a Ball State University senior, causing him to swerve into a fire hydrant at 4:37 p.m., Muncie Police Sgt.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Rollin thrives at Ball State

One year ago, Micah Rollin averaged 3.5 points and 3.5 rebounds per game while playing fewer than 10 minutes per game at the College of Southern Idaho. It was his sophomore year, and his second in organized basketball. One year later, after only participating in 31 organized basketball games, he is starting for a Division I basketball team.

If the Ball State University women's tennis team plans on having any success on the court this season, Haly Calderwood will play an instrumental role. After playing No. 3 and No. 4 singles+â-Ñ most of last season, the junior moves into the No. 1 singles spot when the Cardinals open their season Wednesday against Wright State University.

Students injured in crash

Three Ball State University students sat in a silent car before sunrise, waiting in traffic to turn onto I-69 from state Route 28 when a tractor-trailer slammed into them from behind. "We were just sitting there and there was nothing that we could do [because] we were just waiting in a line of cars," Kelley Wise said.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Cardinals look for third-straight win

As Ball State University's men's basketball team looks to win three straight games for the first time in nearly two years, the Cardinals will play one of the best teams historically in the Mid-American Conference. Over the last eight years, Kent State University has won at least 20 games and had a postseason appearance.

Student to manage Atrium news ticker

As early as Fall 2007, students could be reading constantly updated news scrolling across a screen while eating lunch at the Atrium. The system will be available earlier than expected because Provost Terry King approved funding last week for a graduate assistant position to run it.

Despite soccer being popular, inexpensive and well-developed in Indiana, Ball State University chooses not to have a men's varsity level team. It's a shame. With all the talent in the Midwest, Ball State could actually have a men's team that wins more than half their games.

New rules guide Blue Loop shuttle

As more students begin to ride the Blue Loop shuttle, they need to be aware of the new rules for this east-of-campus bus route. Even though the route remains the same as the Muncie Indiana Transit System trolley ran last year , the Blue Loop is being operated by Ball State University this semester.

Car accident sends three BSU students to hospital

UPDATE - 1 p.m.: Cassie Marquis remains in unknown condition in the Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis, emergency room. Lindsay D. Scott remains in unknown condition in Ball Memorial's emergency room. Kelly Wise has been released from Ball Memorial and is in stable condition.

Once every two years, a Ball State University student gets the chance to step out of the student role and into a select position. Applications for the 2007-09 student seat on the Board of Trustees are now available for students to fill out. Applications are due Feb.

The battle between broadband Internet service providers simulates a boxing match in the ring. In one corner sit companies such as Comcast, with cable Internet, that boast of their fast connection speeds. In the other corner are companies such as AT&T, with DSL, offering lower prices for their services.
