Background screens now required

Students majoring in education at Ball State University are required to submit a criminal background check before teaching at Burris Laboratory School. Marilyn Deweese, instructor of elementary education, said Burris officials began requiring the background checks in Spring 2007 to protect the children in the school.

WiFi testing on shuttles continues

Whether it be to check Facebook, e-mail, or finish typing up a paper or conducting research, Ball State University`s Computing Services are working on allowing students to have wireless access on campus buses. Vernon Draper, assistant director of Networking and Communications for Computing Services, said this research project could benefit students.

College grads find jobs quickly with diploma

Students in the class of 2007 may have an advantage when it comes to finding jobs after graduation. Employers plan to hire 17 percent more college graduates than in 2006, according to the National Association of Colleges and Employers. One reason employers hire more students fresh out of college is because graduates bring energy and enthusiasm into businesses, according to CollegeGrad.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cardinals serve up two wins

It took seven matches, but Saturday the Ball State University men's volleyball team reached its serving goal of 88 percent in-play for the first time this season. Serving a season-high 91 percent in-play, the Cardinals (3-4) defeated Juniata College (0-1) in straight games, 30-20, 30-23, 30-28.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: BSU wins third MAC game

Four players scored in double figures, and Ball State University's men's basketball team made more than 60 percent of its shots in the second half for a 69-57 victory against Ohio University. The Cardinals (7-13, 3-4 Mid-American Conference) used two big runs, a 9-0 run in the first half and a 10-1 run in the second, to beat the Bobcats (13-7, 4-3 MAC).

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Ames has career day against Bobcats

For the first time this season, and the third time in his career at Ball State University, Chris Ames scored 10 points. The senior guard averaged 4.2 points per game before Sunday's contest, and was one of four Cardinal players with double-figure points in the Cardinals' 69-58 win against Ohio University.

Three BSU students, two Muncie residents involved in fatal crash

Ball State University freshman Travis J. Smith died after a traffic accident at about 6:30 p.m. Saturday on Riverside Avenue, Muncie Police Sgt. Brad Arey said. Smith was sitting in the front passenger seat of a silver Toyota Solara, which belonged to a friend, with students Todd Lamkin and Ethan Whaley, Arey said.

Buffalo Wild Wings in Muncie is no longer working with the Student Savings Club, which provides discount cards for students. Mat Townsend, general manager of Buffalo Wild Wings in Muncie, said he was talking to a Student Savings Club sales representative about a program the club was implementing when the sales representative talked to him disrespectfully.

BSU golfer dies in Riverside Avenue accident

Freshman Travis J. Smith died following a car accident on Riverside Avenue on Saturday, Layne Cameron, Ball State University media relations manager, said. Smith was a member of Ball State's men's golf team. Also involved in the accident were freshman Ethan Whaley and junior Todd Lamkin, Muncie Police Sgt. Brad Arey said.

Impressive Cardinals look to break records

When the women's basketball team takes the floor Saturday, the squad will be holding a rare opportunity in its hands. In 33 years, Ball State University has won 11 consecutive games just once. A win against Ohio University would be the second time. However, win or lose Saturday, Cardinals' junior forward Julie DeMuth said the team's standing 18 games into the season is most significant.

Students left without water for a day

Residents of Scheidler Apartments were left without running water after a break in a water main Thursday. A shear in the water line caused a small amount of water to come to the surface of the ground at around 9 a.m., Sally Friestat, assistant director of housing and residence life, said.

Orientation leader applications due today

Some students who aren't ready to leave Ball State University at the end of Spring Semester don't have to go home. They can hang out with incoming freshmen instead. Today is the last day for students to apply to be a 2007 summer orientation leader. Leaders work with groups of 20 to 25 incoming freshmen for day-and-a-half programs, Associate Director of Admissions Chris Munchel said.

Last summer senior David Collier earned an internship with University Directories, which trained him out of state and then put him in the position of local sales manager for the Ball State University Directory, or B-Book. Collier first met the contacts for the internship at Ball State's annual sales job fair.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Ball State squares off against DePaul

Last season, the Ball State University women's tennis team didn't put up much of a fight against DePaul University, falling 7-0. The Cardinals (1-0) get a chance for redemption Sunday when the Blue Demons (1-1) travel to Muncie. With a victory, Ball State would improve to 2-0 after defeating Wright State University 6-1 Wednesday.

New concerto will premiere at Emens

Ball State University professor Robert Palmer will join the Muncie Symphony Orchestra to perform a three-piece program 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Emens Auditorium. The show, "Where Worlds Meet," will feature "Concerto in B for Piano and Orchestra," a piece written by Jody Nagel, Ball State professor of music theory and composition.
