Purdue to keep searching for missing student

WEST LAFAYETTE (AP) - Purdue University plans to keep open a volunteer center set up to aid in the search for a missing freshman. Wade Steffey, 19, of Bloomington, was last seen early Jan. 13 after a party at the Phi Kappa Theta fraternity house on the north side of campus.

Tom Collins, the current athletics director, is making a conscious effort to include students in the decision-making process. An online survey centered on improving four issues affecting the Ball State sports community: the overall perception of the athletic program as a whole, which sport most represented the university, which sport should represent the university and student participation.

GYMNASTICS: Gymnastics team beats Alaska

The Ball State University gymnastics team (1-3, 0-1) recorded its first victory of the season, defeating the University of Alaska-Anchorage 189.325 to 186.575 Sunday in Irving Gym. Senior Jenna Tarkington placed first in the vault with a score of 9.775. Senior Kelly Watson set a career-best in the floor with a score of 9.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Bobcats pounce on Cardinals

Throughout Ball State University's women's basketball team 10-game winning streak, the Cardinals always seemed to be the team to respond in tight situations. On Saturday, those roles were reversed. With a little more than six minutes to play in Ball State's 77-66 loss to Ohio University, the two teams were tied at 53.

MEN'S TENNIS: Cards get wings clipped against Illinois

Without one of its best players, the No. 69 Ball State University men's tennis team suffered a shutout loss to No. 5 University of Illinois. Junior Jarrod Epkey, who played No. 3 singles and No. 1 doubles for the Cardinals, was not in the lineup this weekend and is out indefinitely because of back problems, coach Bill Richards said.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: All the points don't add up for Ball State

Two of the five Ball State University (16-3, 7-1) women's basketball starters averaged more points in the team's three losses than they did in the team's wins. One of them is leading scorer Julie Demuth. In the Cardinal's loss to Ohio University Saturday, Demuth led Ball State with 19 points.

Remembered as calling himself the next Tiger Woods by his friend Brandon Malone, Travis J. Smith loved the game of golf. His mother, Tami Smith, said it was his dream to play golf professionally. That dream made him a part of the men's golf team for Ball State University.

SWIMMING AND DIVING: Teams lose to Ohio

A weekend of tough competition hurt the Cardinals as the Ball State University men's and women's swimming and diving teams lost to Mid-American Conference opponent Ohio University. The men's team lost the meet 145-98, but co-coach Bob Thomas said the meet was closer than what the final score suggested.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Cardinals lose to Blue Demons

Christine Stromberg made the most of an opportunity to play against her hometown college. Stromberg, from the Chicago area, was the only Ball State University player to record a victory as DePaul University defeated the Cardinals 6-1 Sunday. The freshman came from behind to win the first set against Anja Mihaldinec 7-5.

Having come of age in the 1980s and 1990s, I was an avid fan of the Beastie Boys. I vaguely remember hearing stories of notorious stage antics that featured giant motorized inflatable penises and women dancing in cages. However, by the early part of this decade, the hip-hop trio abandoned these activities and had adopted more politically conscious exploits.
