As Valentine's Day nears consumers are craving more than just candy, and Verizon Wireless has unveiled two new phone offerings to help lovelorn techies find gifts for loved ones. The Strawberry Chocolate, announced by Verizon Wireless Monday, is the newest flavor of the carrier's LG Chocolate line of phones, which also includes White Chocolate, Cherry Chocolate, Mint Chocolate and the original Dark Chocolate.

FOOTBALL RECRUITMENT: Twenty-four players sign letter of intent

Ohio proved to be a fertile recruiting ground for Ball State University in its 2007 recruiting class, with nine of its 24 recruits coming from the Buckeye State. Those recruits provide a bulk of the talent, ranked fourth in the Mid-American Conference (79th overall) by Rivals.

Police enforce road safety

Motorists better think twice before pushing the pedal to the metal or not snapping in a seat belt during the next two weeks. The Ball State University and Muncie police departments are participating in Operation Pull Over, a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration road safety campaign, Director of Public Safety Gene Burton said.

It fell too thick for snow plows to keep up, so many roads remained covered until it stopped. Police reported accidents all over the city, and two people died when two semitrailers hit head-on 10 miles north of Muncie on I-69. While most students bundled up in hats, coats and gloves, some still went to class in shorts and T-shirts despite temperatures that peaked at 12 degrees Fahrenheit but dipped as low as -2 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the NWS.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: BSU looks to break streak against Buffalo

Ball State University's men's basketball team is on the edge of ensuring that the school will have its fourth losing regular season in five years. Should the Cardinals drop one more game, they will have no hope of passing the .500-mark. Ball State (7-15, 3-6 in the Mid-American Conference) will look to end a two-game losing streak as they play the University at Buffalo (10-12, 2-7 MAC) at 7 p.

Police close Brewington case

Senior Derek Brewington, whose family and friends have not heard from him in more than a week, stayed the past eight days at a New York City hostel, Ball State University spokesman Layne Cameron said. The student's father, Dan Brewington, said he spoke to a man in charge of the hostel, who confirmed that 22-year-old Derek Brewington had been at the hostel just that morning.

t's a pain in the apricot. Trying to eat lunch anywhere near the middle of campus, especially the Atrium, is harder for students this semester. Cashiers are struggling to learn new cash register systems after their installation in recent months. Ultimately, student customers are paying the price of time, as well as food - waiting in longer lines than what some students' schedules can budget.

Sorority looks for Phi-Nominal men

Men reciting poetry and reading minds will be some of the acts Ball State University students can expect to see at Alpha Phi sorority's eighth annual Mr. Phi-Nominal. The talent show will be at 9:30 p.m. today in Pruis Hall. Alpha Phi President Karrah Duvall said the event has 13 men from around campus participating in four categories: an interview, a talent portion, a final question round and a penny wars competition.

Black people make up 13 percent of the country's population but almost 50 percent of HIV/AIDS diagnoses in the U.S., according to the National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness day Web site. In honor of this day, free and anonymous HIV tests will be given today at Ball State University for its third annual observation of NBHAAD.

Smoking rule sparks debate

Crafted out of cigarette boxes, the letters I-M-P-U-R-E dangle from a bulletin board in the Art and Journalism Building, forming a statement with which the members of a Ball State University Business Fellows group can agree. Lax enforcement of the current university smoking policy and health concerns have led the group, including faculty members Jeff Clark and his wife, Susan, along with nine students, to work to make Ball State a smoke-free campus.
