The Daily News editorial board endorses U.N.I.T.E.D. Initiative in the Student Government Association executive slate election. Despite this conclusion, some board members wouldn't have endorsed either slate. During their visits to the Daily News, both slates explained their platforms and answered questions from the editorial board.

Honestly, how difficult can it be? Every day while driving on or around campus, I feel as if people's brains are riding shotgun instead of being put to use in their head. I know, I know - the tirade that's forthcoming is one that I'm sure you and your friends have each and every day.

Dining accepts plastic

Ball State University students, faculty and staff now have the option of using credit or debit cards to purchase food from the Atrium, Noyer Retreat and Bookmark Caf+â-¬.-á Dining Director Jon Lewis said those locations got new cash registers because the old systems were more than 10 years old and the maintenance to keep them functioning was not worth the cost.

Students were simply trying to be tolerant

This just in: Edwin Yoder, principal of Woodlan High School in Woodburn, says discussion of homosexuality is inappropriate at the high school level, and has demanded full editorial control over the school's newspaper. The reason for his overreaction? An editorial, written by a high school sophomore, that of all things urged tolerance of homosexuals.

Freshman leads BSU in rare Monday match

Ball State University initially struggled with Valparaiso University's unorthodox playing style, but the final score proved the Cardinals were up to the task. Valparaiso didn't make it easy, but the Cardinals defeated the Crusaders 6-1 in an unusual Monday morning match.

Mother, daughter share stage

Twelve women dressed in red and black gathered on couches of the same colors for some casual and intimate conversation to discuss female sexuality Friday, Saturday and Sunday in the L.A. Pittenger Student Center Ballroom. Although it was a bonding experience for all who performed in "The Vagina Monologues" the experience had special significance for 45-year-old Avise Skinner, a nontraditional nursing major and her 17-year-old daughter Georgia.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Ball State splits conference matches

The Ball State University men's volleyball team defeated a ranked opponent for the first time this season, but then dropped its next match. The Cardinals (8-6, 3-1 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) upset No. 6 IPFW (9-3, 4-3 MIVA), 3-1 (30-27, 30-24, 19-30, 30-16) Friday.

SOFTBALL: Ball State finishes 1-4 at MTSU event

A plethora of errors hampered the Ball State University softball team as it lost four of its five games in the Middle Tennessee State University Breast Cancer Strikeout Classic. The lone victory of the weekend for the Cardinals (3-7) was a 8-6 win against Belmont University Friday.

Hip-hop footwork hits BSU

He's back. No, not the ghost from the "Poltergeist," but David Krich, also known as Kasper. The 26-year-old, world-renowned choreographer, disc jockey and reality TV star showed Ball State University he could dance during a two-day hip hop workshop last weekend.

I normally don't write into the Daily News, but after reading the Your Turn "Why you Should Vote U.N.I.T.E.D" I couldn't help but grab a pen and rebuke this poorly written article. What makes the Daily News occasionally frustrating, but ultimately successful, is the varying views of the students - not those of a select few staff members, but of all students.

TRACK AND FIELD: BSU places third in conference

Led by junior Amber Williams' record-setting first place finish in the 60-meter hurdles, the Ball State University women's track and field team finished third at the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships. Williams ran the hurdles in 8.19 seconds, setting a new indoor MAC meet record and Akron Fieldhouse record.

MEN'S TENNIS: BSU learns from loss

Ball State University's men's tennis team started off strong against undefeated Purdue University by winning the doubles point, but struggled in singles matches, losing 4-3 Sunday. Coach Bill Richards said he was not disappointed with the loss. "Everyone played well," Richards said.

GYMNASTICS: Cards get record score

Motivation was the key to success Friday as the Ball State University gymnastics team beat Mid-American Conference foe Northern Illinois University by one point. Coach Lisa Simonton said the crowd gave the biggest boost for the Cardinals as they finished the meet with 192.

Beginning today, students have the opportunity to decide new executive leaders for the Student Government Association. The SGA is the voice of the student body that expresses concern to the university administration. Though SGA is an important organization, many students opt not to participate in the voting process.

MEN'S SWIMMING: Hembree earns second team All-MAC honors

Ball State University's men's swimming and diving team struggled at the Mid-American Conference championships, finishing fifth. Not a single swimmer or diver won an event, with Kyle Hembree being the only Cardinal to finish in the top four in any event. Hembree was also the only member of the team to make the All-MAC squads, earning a position on the second team.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Crowd brings emotion to the game

A record crowd of 4,711 piled into Worthen Arena on senior night for Ball State University's women's basketball team to watch the Cardinals pull out a thrilling 74-73 victory against Eastern Michigan University. "It was the most emotion I've ever felt since I've been here," senior Kelsey Corbin said.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Two-week break doesn't hurt team

If there was any rust from not playing for two weeks, the Ball State University women's tennis team certainly didn't show it. With the doubles team setting the tone, the Cardinals cruised to a 6-1 victory against Butler University Friday. The No. 1 doubles team of Haly Calderwood and Jennifer Pollack continued its strong play, cruising to an 8-1 victory.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Late run by Eagles dooms Cardinals

Ball State University's men's basketball team is closing in on history, but not in a way it would like. After losing to Eastern Michigan University 61-51 Sunday the Cardinals are only one loss away from a school record-tying 20 losses in a season. That means that the Cardinals (9-19, 5-9 in the Mid-American Conference) will have to beat the University of Toledo (16-11, 12-2 in the MAC) and Western Michigan University (13-15, 7-7 MAC), then win the Mid-American Conference championship and the national championship to avoid tying the mark set in 1971 when a Bud Getchell-coached team went 6-20.

BASEBALL: Cardinals win first game of season against Lipscomb

Ball State University's baseball team earned its first win of the season this weekend, but was also dominated by the nation's top team. In its second week of action Ball State (1-6) opened the weekend with a 1-0 victory against Lipscomb Saturday. Ryan Chenoweth batted in Wayne Bond in the first inning for the game's only run.
