Bill to assist students, film companies

Indiana will become a more film-friendly state after this year, and Ball State University's award winning telecommunications programs could reap the benefits. Ball State's Department of Telecommunications was honored as the TV School of the Year on March 3, and a bill passed this year could bring in more TV talent, internships and job opportunities for students.

Ball State considers new sport

The addition of a new sport program could come with the new plan for compliance toward the Education Act of 1972 at Ball State University. A plan was drafted in 2001 but expired at the end of 2006. Ball State hopes to have a new five-year plan in place by the end of this summer.

The opera "53rd Street," which shows tonight and Sunday, will allow students to get a glimpse of life on the streets of New York City. The opera was composed by Jody Nagel, associate professor of music theory and composition. "53rd Street" is the story of two homeless men living on the streets of New York and their treatment by various groups of society.

Police search for suspect in gun incident

Muncie police continue to search for a suspect involved in an assault that led to the arrest of a Ball State University student Friday morning at Linden Place Apartments, police said. Investigator Darrin Clark said someone pistol-whipped apartment resident Anthony Lee in the head, then fired a single shot through Lee and roommate Stephen Brandon's apartment door.

Dining hall to open in Fall

After spending countless afternoons standing in the rain, snow and freezing cold due to a construction project setting off the fire alarm, the women of Woodworth Complex are looking forward to the opening of the dining location in the Fall. The campus police as well as the local firefighters had their work cut out for them, having a fire drill at Woodworth Complex several times a week and several times a day on certain occasions, junior Kesley Hoover, Brady Hall resident assistant, said.

While the Ball State University softball team suffered another loss Tuesday, one Cardinal made history against the University of Michigan. Senior Kelli Jeziorski led the Cardinals (13-23, 4-4 Mid-American Conference) at the plate, as she went 2-3 with a single and a home run.

FOOTBALL: Redshirt freshman quarterback leaves team

Quarterback Zach Jones, a redshirt freshman on the Ball State University football team, has decided to leave the program, coach Brady Hoke said Monday. Jones, a 6-foot-7, 220-pound freshman from Morris, Ill., did not see any action in the 2006 season after redshirting in 2005.

BASEBALL: Stines to start on mound today against NAIA foe

Having lost six of the last seven games, the Ball State University baseball team now has a two-game break from Mid-American Conference play. The Cardinals (12-18, 3-6 MAC) play two mid-week games this week, with the first being today against the Indiana Institute of Technology, a member of the NAIA.

BASEBALL: Extra inning victory

Despite a bad hitting day, the Ball State University baseball team was able to pick up a victory in extra innings against Indiana Institute of Technology. Ball State had two hits and one run in the bottom of the first, but did not pick up its third hit of the game until the seventh inning.

In honor of National Student Employment Week, the Ball State University Career Center is encouraging campus employers to recognize deserving student employees by nominating them online, said Janet Puckett, student employment representative. All students nominated will be eligible to win prizes, such as sweatshirts and food coupons, Puckett said, and one employee will win free books for a semester.
