FOOTBALL: Lynch leaves Cards to coach at St. Joseph

Former Ball State University quarterback Joey Lynch was named the offensive coordinator and quarterback coach at St. Joseph's College Tuesday. Prior to taking the new position at St. Joseph's College, Lynch was going to be a Ball State graduate assistant football coach for the upcoming season.

BSU receives $2.59 million

Lilly Endowment Inc. announced Monday Ball State University exceeded its private gift goals for an endowment program and received $2.59 million in matching money from the company. Lilly donated a total of $96.5 million to 28 Indiana colleges and universities as part of the endowment's Special Initiative to Strengthen Philanthropy for Higher Education Institutions.

Wages to increase for campus jobs

All Ball State University student employees will make at least $5.85 an hour after July 19 because of a federal minimum wage increase plan passed on May 24. The plan will increase the minimum wage to $7.25 an hour by 2009 in a three-step process. The current campus minimum wage is $5.

New coal boilers to help reduce gas emissions at BSU

The Indiana General Assembly Friday approved a $41.8 million grant to Ball State University for a project that will replace four boilers on campus. Jim Lowe, director of engineering and operations at Ball State, said the General Assembly approved the money two years ago, but Ball State had to present a plan showing it could replace the boilers for a lower price than a third-party contracting company could before it could receive the money.

SummerFit program kicks off

Gov. Mitch Daniels was recognized by the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports Friday for his efforts to improve the health of Indiana residents through the INShape Indiana program. SummerFit, an INShape Indiana program, sends Hoosiers weekly e-mails with health and fitness guidelines coordinated by a points system.

Brady Hoke scurried around the bright new field turf of Schuemann Stadium with his whistle in hand, shouting out instructions as he taught the game of football. The only thing missing from a typical football practice were fully padded players. Instead, Hoke's audience was women from the Muncie community.

Driver's licenses see new format

A new Indiana driver's license format was introduced Friday at the BMV License Branch in Pine Valley, Ft. Wayne. BMV branches in Anderson, Connersville, Greenfield, and Liberty will introduce the new license Tuesday, and the remaining Indiana branches will begin distributing the new license in August.

New architecture dean set to begin job in early August

The College of Architecture and Planning selected Guillermo Vasquez de Velasco as its new dean. Vasquez de Velasco, who is executive associate dean and director of outreach at Texas A&M University, will take over the Ball State University position on Aug. 1.

BASEBALL: Heyne undecided about going pro

Two days after the Minnesota Twins drafted him, the biggest question for Kyle Heyne is whether he'll sign a contract. Heyne did not sign with an agent prior to the draft, giving him the option to return to Ball State University for his senior season. Unlike athletes who are selected in the NFL and NBA drafts, Heyne can choose to decline the Twins' contract offer and return to Ball State for his final year of eligibility without any NCAA sanctions.

Anthropology students have discovered the foundation of a structure they believe to have been a guesthouse near a Cambridge City museum. The students, led by anthropology professor Mark Groover, are in Cambridge City as part of the National Road Historical Archaeology Field School.

Ball State University football players aren't the only people benefitting from the newly-renovated Scheumann Stadium. Saturday, the first-ever women's football clinic took place at the new stadium. The clinic was the football team's effort to reach out to women in the community and benefit a good cause at the same time.

TURNING A BLIND EYE: Death penalty not warranted in murder trial

In a move that could have long-lasting ramifications for Indiana's criminal justice system, a Lawrenceburg judge denied Tommy Pruitt's request for a new trial Friday. This clears the way for Pruitt to face the death penalty for the murder of a Morgan County sheriff's deputy in 2001.

Field trip program recognized

Ball State's Electronic Field Trip programs, which allow schoolchildren to visit national parks and museums and interact with experts, have been recognized as recipient of a 2007 TechPoint Mira Award. The EFT programs won the award in the category of "Education Contribution for Technology-Department/Program/Team" and beat out finalists from Purdue University and Rose-Hulman Ventures.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cardinals ready to be tournament tested

For a coach who didn't have a lot to say about his team's schedule, coach Dave Boos said he is happy with it. Entering his first season as the Ball State University women's volleyball team's head coach, Boos said former coach Randy Litchfield completed a majority of his 2008 schedule, which was released last week, through previous agreements with schools before Boos was hired in January.

Dining to offer Web ordering

Long waits and crowded lines could be reduced at the Atrium Food Court and Woodworth Dining if a new Web-order pickup system is successful. The system, which will be fully implemented in Fall Semester, will let students and faculty use their meal points to order food on the Ball State University Dining Web site and schedule a pickup time.

Village bar to relocate

Outside seating, a higher occupancy and an additional bar are among the amenities that will be added to the Giant Locker Room when it moves later this summer, owner Scott Dalton said. The sports bar will move two blocks from its location on the corner of University Avenue and Martin Street to 1813 W.
