BASEBALL: There's a new saves leader

At six foot five inches, Ball State University closer Kyle Heyne towers on the mound slinging his slider, fastball and changeup to close the door on his team's victories. Up until this past weekend, Heyne was tied for the Ball State career saves record with a self-described short, fat with little power pitcher from the 1980s.

SWIMMING AND DIVING: Ball State finishes last at MAC

The Ball State University women's swimming and diving team finished the Mid-American Conference championships with its worst finish in 28 years of competing at the meet. Ball State finished in last of the eight teams at the four-day competition. "I hate that fact," co-coach Laura Seibold-Caudill said.

Phi Gamma Delta fraternity members sat in Minnetrista, gathered together while a roasted pig was brought into the room. "We're bringing in the pig. We're bringing in the pig. We shall come rejoicing, we're bringing in the pig," the crowd of Phi Gamma Delta members sang together as the roasted pig came to the front of the room.

About one in every eight college students has an eating disorder, counselor Kasee Matters said. While most people monitor their weight and body image, it's when those concerns become unhealthy or obsessive that students might develop eating disorders, she said.

Check fraud scam resurfaces in Ind.

Let the seller beware: students using online marketplaces such as eBay or Craigslist.com might get rid of more than the items they want to sell. Linda Carmody, president of the Better Business Bureau of Central Indiana, said a form of consumer fraud known as an "overpayment scam" has resurfaced, affecting four people across the state this year, including two students who lost money.

University Senate passed the Beneficence Pledge Thursday. Jamie Manuel, the Ball State University Student Government Association vice president, said there was not much discussion about the issue. What was questioned was what would happen once it was passed, he said.

Two slates vie for SGA office

Three slates came to the second Student Government Association nomination convention after nobody showed up for the first convention on Feb. 12. Lynda Wiley, director of the Office of Student Life, said after the first convention that she did not recall a time since at least 1997 that no students announced they would run for SGA.

The Ball State Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced Thursday the Cardinals' Saturday home match against East Stroudsburg University was canceled because of inclement weather in Pennsylvania.

Two executive slates announced they will run for office in the Student Government Association election. The slates are Campus Alliance and Andrews-Albritton '08. A third slate attempted to announce its candidacy, but it was denied because it did not meet an application requirement.

Riding a three-game losing streak, the Ball State University men's tennis team will try at its match against the University of Eastern Kentucky and Indiana State University at home this weekend to pull out of its slump. Standing at 3-6 on the season, coach Bill Richards said the Cardinals need to come through in tight situations and find a way to capitalize on opportunities to come out on top Friday against the Colonels and Sunday against the Sycamores.

Motivation comes in a variety of forms. For Ball State University sophomore Ali Bishel, it came in the form of a medical condition. "I started running because I had exercise asthma," Bishel said. "My doctor said that running was the best thing for it, so I did it.

Ball State University is on its way to having a mostly smoke-free campus as March 17 approaches and the implementation of the ban begins. The implementation process is on schedule and has experienced no problems, Kay Bales, vice president for student affairs and dean of students, said.

While the Ball State University track and field team returns home at 4 p.m., redshirt senior Amber Williams will be on her way to Boston to participate in the USA Indoor Championships. Williams will run the 60-meter hurdles in a preliminary round on Saturday with a chance to qualify for the finals on Sunday.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Coach vague on Rusche's benching

When the starting lineups were announced Tuesday against the University of Toledo, Lisa Rusche's name did not blare over the public address system. Instead, freshman Emily Maggert took the floor for the Ball State University women's basketball team in Rusche's place as the senior watched the opening six minutes from the bench for the first time this season.
