SOFTBALL: Strong pitching performances guide Cardinals to 9-4 records

A trio of pitchers helped guide the Ball State University softball team to a 9-4 record during Spring Break, the most successful span for the Cardinals in the tenure of coach Craig Nicholson. Tiffany Garofano, Laura Masch and Elizabeth Milian each picked up multiple wins as the Cardinals improved their season record to 16-12, the best record in Nicholson's two-year tenure with Ball State.

Music therapy

When Ball State University music education instructor Amy Hourigan first heard about music therapy, she was puzzled. "I thought, 'Music therapy-what's that?'" she said. "I thought people were standing around singing kumbaya." Hourigan quickly learned otherwise: Music therapy is an established, evidence-based healthcare profession that uses music interventions to address individual needs, according to the American Music Therapy Association.

Businesses prepare for Irish holiday

While students can't kiss the Blarney Stone to get the luck of the Irish, that doesn't mean they can't go to Muncie businesses for a swig of green beer and to enjoy Irish cuisine. With St. Patrick's Day here, Muncie bars and restaurants will offer patrons food and drink specials, while some will provide live music.

Smoking ban begins

Smokers beware - lighting up on Ball State University's campus could cost $50 beginning Monday. Tom Morrison, associate vice president for business affairs, said staff from facilities planning and management spent Spring Break placing signs to designate the 12 smoking-permitted areas.

MEN'S GOLF: Cards second at invitational after day one

In its second tournament of the spring season, the Ball State University men's golf team is tied for second place after the first round at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate in Pinehurst, N.C. Carding a team-combined score of 303, the Cardinals trail Indiana University by 17 strokes.

BASEBALL: Team splits eight games over break

Playing eight games in a 10-day span, the Ball State University baseball team broke even. The Cardinals defeated four of their opponents and lost to four. Ball State started Spring Break in Conway, S.C. in the Springmaid Beach Resort Tournament. The Cardinals won the first game against Long Island University 8-7 before dropping back-to-back games to Coastal Carolina University, 6-1 and 10-8 respectively.

MEN'S GOLF: Cards in sixth place with 18 holes remaining

After two rounds of the Pinehurst Intercollegiate in Pinehurst, N.C., the Ball State University men's golf team is in sixth place. With a team-combined score of 304 in the second round, the Cardinals fell four spots in the leader board. Indiana University leads the invitational with a total score of 578.

MEN'S TENNIS: Coach frustrated by performances

The 80-degree weather of Las Vegas almost served as Spring Break to the Ball State University men's tennis players, if they would have won. Instead, in a 5-2 loss to University of Nevada, Las Vegas, the Cardinals dropped their first outdoor contest of the spring in a match that perplexed head coach Bill Richards.

OUR VIEW: Smoke free-ish

Welcome to the "smoke-free" Ball State University, where smoke isn't blown in your face; it's blown up your butt. Beginning Monday, Ball State became a self-proclaimed smoke-free university with 12 designated smoking zones scattered across its campus. Ball State advertising itself as a smoke-free campus while still allowing smoking in certain areas is like a member of a temeprance society popping open a brew after getting home from work everyday.

GYMNASTICS: Cards get first win of season during break

After nine tries the Ball State University gymnastics team picked up its first victory this season. The Cardinals finished second in a three-team competition to earn the win. Two weekends ago, the Cardinals traveled to the University Illinois-Chicago to compete against the Flames and Missouri State University.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Cardinals use Spring Break to recharge

The Ball State University women's tennis team found itself with a rare break from competition last week. With the mounting injuries and illnesses the team was facing, the break could not have come at a better time. Sophomore No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles player Sophie Quist, for example, was able to rest her nagging shoulder.

WOMEN'S GOLF: BSU starts season with ninth place finish

The Ball State University women's golf team opened its spring season with a ninth place finish out of 18 teams at the Rio Verde Collegiate Invitational. The Cardinals finished with a 54-over-par 918 in the invitational, which was played March 7 through March 9 at Rio Verde, Ariz.

Scotty's Brewhouse creates Web site ordering system

With the click of a mouse, customers can save time by ordering and paying for carry-out meals online at a Village restaurant. Scotty's Brewhouse manager Phil Juskevice said the restaurant began accepting orders through its Web site in January. Juskevice said the service started slowly, but the restaurant tried to publicize it, offering online-only specials in February.

After missing a wide-open 15-footer and recording her second personal foul, Lisa Rusche stared at the Jumbotron in Quicken Loans Arena and released an aggravated sigh. With her team trailing five points in the final 90 seconds of regulation, the senior's quiet emotion exhibited Ball State's frustration level.

CLEVELAND--Staying competitive throughout the second half, Ball State had a chance to cut its deficit to two points with two minutes left in Wednesday's opening round of the Mid-American Conference Tournament. However, senior Peyton Stovall missed a fast-break layup, and Eastern Michigan answered with a transition bucket to push its lead to six.

CLEVELAND--Comfortable in its ability to close a lead down the stretch after a season filled with comebacks, Ball State found itself in an awkward position Tuesday night. Instead of being able to forge ahead in the late stages, the Cardinals couldn't muster the plays down the stretch to continue its disappointing season.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Heartbreak redux

CLEVELAND--In March 2007, after Ball State University was eliminated from the Mid-American Conference tournament by Eastern Michigan University, forward Anthony Newell said he still felt his Cardinals were the better team, despite three losses to the Eagles that season.
