From the ashes of Doc's on Dill St. rises a new establishment: a bar called Charlie's Library. Charlie's general manager Kyrie Wolfe said although Charlie's Library, which opens today, is another Village bar, plenty of steps will be taken to set it apart from all others.

Symphony plays at Minnetrista

Muncie Symphony Orchestra headlined a music festival at Minnetrista Cultural Center Wednesday night that attracted nearly 500 audience members. Starting at 7 p.m., the concert featured five performances representing a wide spectrum of music and dance. The TraZom Trio of Pianoforte Inc.

SOCCER: Ball State looks to improve despite youth

After having a losing record, graduating seven seniors and hiring a new coach last season, the Ball State University soccer team expects to have a young, yet much improved team. The team has its share of youth, with 10 freshmen on the roster. It also has a pair of goalkeepers vieing for the starting position after losing All-MAC goalie Rachel Murphy to graduation.

FROM THE HOOD: New smoking area less safe, has less seating

Two years ago, Ball State University officials implemented its campuswide smoking "ban" in an effort to protect students' health by clearing campus of secondhand smoke. In order to protect the newly displaced smokers, Ball State officials compromised and set aside 11 areas on campus for smokers to light up so they wouldn't venture off campus, out of the area of protection of the University Police Department and into poorly lit neighborhoods.

Not all Honors College students are living in DeHority

Some Honors College students weren't placed in DeHority Hall this year, despite it being advertised as the new location for students in the program. This semester 6,635 students are living in residence halls, which is 442 more than last year, Alan Hargrave, director of housing and residence life, said.

It's been a busy week on campus for the members of Ball State University's greek community, and today will be no exception. Both men and women will be on the University Green near the Whitinger Business Building with recruitment information and a chance to meet members of greek organizations.

A CLOSE SHAVE: Pressure is on for some BSU head coaches

It's obvious from the barrage of various advertisements and local media coverage that the Ball State University football team and its success the past two seasons has most Cardinals sports fans eagerly awaiting the kickoff of the 2009 season more than just about any other athletic team in recent school history.

Weekend arrests down from last year

Police were out in force as Ball State University students returned for another year, and officers on the lookout for alcohol violations found plenty to keep them busy. Indiana State Police Sgt. Rod Russell said during opening weekend in Delaware County, 50 people were arrested for minor consumption of alcohol, 20 were for driving while intoxicated and 17 were for public intoxication.

MEN'S GOLF: Steger eliminated in U.S. Amateur Championships match play

Steger - one of 312 players in the event - advanced to the U.S. Amateur Championships by winning the U.S. Amateur Sectional Qualifer at Coldstream Country Club in Cincinnati, Ohio. He tied for ninth overall after two rounds of stroke play at Tulsa's Southern HIlls Country Club by shooting a 72-71.

Ball State alumnus, Papa John's founder reunites with his old beloved car

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - With the help of a $250,000 reward, a Ball State University alumnus finally reunited with the muscle car he sold years ago to help keep his family's national pizza chain business afloat. John Schnatter - the founder of Papa John's pizza who graduated from Ball State in 1984 - sold the gold-and-black 1971 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 for $2,800 in 1983.

Exhibit aims to open students' eyes to the effects of war

Many students on campus Monday and Tuesday were intrigued by the sight of 155 pairs of black military boots scattered on the lawn beside the Shafer Tower. The goal of the display, "Eyes Wide Open," was to raise awareness about the repercussions of war. Each pair of shoes represented a soldier from Indiana who has died in the war in the Middle East.

MEN'S GOLF: Golfer moves up to 9th after second round in National tournament

Junior Eric Steger, a member of the Ball State men's golf team, is currently tied for ninth place out of 312 golfers in the U.S. Amateur Championships at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla. Steger is participating in the event because he won the sectional qualifier at Coldstream Country Club in Cincinnati, OH.

Comedian brings full house to Pruis

Pruis Hall reached its maximum capacity Tuesday night when about 650 students attended Steve Hofstetter's comedy show. The show was part of Welcome Week, which was organized by the University Program Board. Senior telecommunications major and director of UPB Sam Maples said Welcome Week started the semester on a good note, with students of all years participating in the events organized by the Board.
