It was far from the ideal start to the season and the Stan Parrish era for Ball State University on Thursday night. The University of North Texas upset Ball State 20-10 on the opening night of college football. The Cardinals never held a lead in the game and spent only seven minutes tied with the visitors.

Ball State University students looking for something to do between 9 p.m. and 1 a.m. tonight can enjoy free food and activities in Irving Gym. The festivities are part of University Program Board's "best party on campus" - Late Nite. In celebration of this weekend's luau theme, Late Nite will offer smoothies and snow cones, Hawaii-inspired games, a mechanical surfboard and tropical crafts, including make-your-own shell bracelets and luau photo frames.

Security at football games similar to last year

In preparation for the first football game of the year, Ball State University's campus police department doesn't plan on making many changes to its security strategy. Gene Burton, director of public safety at Ball State, said he feels his department has just the right amount of security to get the job done smoothly this year.

Ball State University's University Senate will have its first meeting of the Fall Semester today. According to the meeting agenda, the Senate will be finalizing their committees and reviewing revised academic programs. U.S. News and World Report, author of "America's Best College" rankings, named Ball State University as a top institution for first-year freshman experiences for the sixth consecutive year. Free taxi service provides safe rides home from local bars

Riding in a cab for free doesn't happen very often. That is unless you happen to be riding with Pretty Darn Quick taxi service from noon until 3 a.m., seven days a week, when one can get a ride from their home to more than 20 different bars in the Muncie area.

First Thursday to showcase regional artists

Ohio photographer Dave Liggett will be the featured artist at the Artist Within for the month of September. The gallery will have the First Thursday opening reception from 5 to 8 p.m. tonight. The exhibit will be on display through Sept. 26. Liggett's photography combines travel and features landscapes, animals, people and decaying buildings.

FOOTBALL: Parrish says tight end may be out for the year

Coach Stan Parrish said captain Madaris Grant suffered what likely will be a career-ending injury in Thursday's 20-10 loss to the University of North Texas. Parrish said his senior tight end suffered a knee injury that appears to be an ACL tear. Recovery from such an injury usually takes a year.

Ball State partners with the Woodrow Wilson Indiana Teaching Fellowship

Ball State University is among four universities in the state that are partnering with the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation to strengthen their teaching programs. The Woodrow Wilson Indiana Teaching Fellowship will offer students the opportunity to receive licensure in mathematics, physics or physical science, as well as a master's in secondary education.

OUR VIEW: Show up tonight

Not that you didn't know, but Ball State University begins its football season tonight with a home game against the University of North Texas. Last year was, for lack of a better word, magical. Despite the last two games of the season, in which the Cardinals were embarrassed, the Ball State community watched as one of the perennial punching bags of college football slowly climbed up the rankings each week and entered BCS talks for the first time ever.
