Students partner with city to make creative district

Ball State graduate students look to redesign a blighted downtown neighborhood into a hub for local “makers.”Last week, community members, national redevelopers, business leaders and Ball State urban planning graduate students met to pull together proposals to transform the six-block area in the Goldsmith C. Gilbert Historic District.

Student turns suicide tragedy into passion

In late spring of 2002, Carmen Diaz and her three siblings sat in the car with their father. He turned back to them and said, “Hey, I just want to let you guys know that I love you so much and that everything is going to be OK.”

Muncie Sanitary District says flooding just part of their day

As Muncie slowly fills with water, Wiley Flak and Randy Wright of the Muncie Sanitary District, carefully drive their truck through the streets to help residents. They walk past the wound-up hoses and equipment on their truck to grab two rakes and begin wading to where they assume the sidewalk is, scraping the build up out of the storm drains. Whenever Muncie gets high waters from rain, Wright and Flak wade through the knee-deep streets.

Storm system brings flooding, highlights drainage issues

More than an inch and a half of rain since midnight triggered minor flooding and other high-water aggravation across campus today.The G15 faculty and staff yellow parking lot next to Lucina Hall started to flood early this morning, according to an email sent out by the University Police Department.Kevin Kenyon, associate vice president of facilities, said the email was sent out as a preventative measure."[The flooding in lot G15] is an issue with inadequate drainage, and it’s beyond our control,” Kenyon said.

7.8 magnitude earthquake rocks Chile, second earthquake this week

IQUIQUE, Chile (AP) — A powerful 7.8-magnitude aftershock hit Chile's far-northern coast late Wednesday night, shaking the same area where a magnitude-8.2 earthquake hit just a day before causing some damage and six deaths.Chile's Emergency Office and navy issues a tsunami alert and ordered a precautionary evacuation of low-lying areas on the northern coast, meaning many people could be spending another sleepless night away from their homes.The aftershock caused buildings to shake and people to run out into the streets in the port of Iquique, which was one of the cities that saw some damage from Tuesday night's big quake.

A Ball State alumna will appear on Friday’s episode of “Shark Tank” to pitch her product to the millionaire and billionaire “sharks.” Courtney Turich, a 2000 Ball State graduate, and Christie Barany, her business partner, will try to sell the idea of their Monkey Mat to the self-made, multi-millionaires and billionaires on the ABC reality TV show to gain the tycoons as sponsors.

SGA asks for changes to course evaluations, grade release

A bill debuted Wednesday in the Student Government Association Senate could ask the university to change its policy regarding teacher evaluations and grades. The resolution requests the university to stop withholding grades unless students complete their course evaluations.
