A Ball State alumna will appear on Friday’s episode of “Shark Tank” to pitch her product to the millionaire and billionaire “sharks.” Courtney Turich, a 2000 Ball State graduate, and Christie Barany, her business partner, will try to sell the idea of their Monkey Mat to the self-made, multi-millionaires and billionaires on the ABC reality TV show to gain the tycoons as sponsors.

Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity will no longer require new members to go through a pledging process. The change in policy, called the True Gentleman Experience, comes after a Bloomberg News article named Sigma Alpha Epsilon, an organization with more than 240 chapters and 14,000 collegiate members nationwide, the “deadliest U.S. fraternity.”

HealthCare.gov had heavy traffic Monday in the final day for enrollment, with more than 125,000 people on the system at one time and 1.2 million total by noon, The Associated Press reported. Feds: Inmate sent Obama threat to wrong address

PITTSBURGH — A convicted child molester pleaded not guilty to sending a threatening letter to President Barack Obama — albeit to the wrong address. Thirty-four-year-old Joseph Savage, of West Leisenring, Pa., entered the plea when he appeared before a federal magistrate Monday. His defense attorney, Melvin Vatz, declined to comment on the charge.

More than 100 people found in house in Texas

HOUSTON (AP) — A house overflowing with more than 100 people presumed to be in the United States illegally was uncovered just outside Houston on Wednesday, a police spokesman said. The suspected stash house was found during a search for a 24-year-old woman and her two children: a 7-year-old girl and a 5-year-old boy who were reported missing by relatives late Tuesday after a man failed to meet them at an undisclosed location on the city’s north side, said John Cannon, a spokesman for the Houston Police Department. Many of the people in home that authorities said appeared to be part of a human smuggling operation were dressed only in undergarments and they were sitting in filthy conditions and surrounded by trash bags full of old clothing, Cannon said.

Pvt. Manning seeks formal name change to Chelsea

The Army private who was tried and convicted as Bradley Edward Manning for leaking United States secrets to WikiLeaks is petitioning a Kansas court for a name change to Chelsea Elizabeth Manning. Leavenworth County District Court has scheduled an April 23 hearing on the request, according to a Leavenworth Times legal notice sent Wednesday to The Associated Press by a spokesman at Fort Leavenworth, where Manning is serving a 35-year sentence. The petition was filed Jan. 27 and published March 1 after it was submitted by Manning’s lawyer, David Coombs of Providence, R.I.

U.S. prepares $1 billion aid package for troubled Ukraine

KIEV, Ukraine — In a somber show of U.S. support for Ukraine’s new leadership, Secretary of State John Kerry walked the streets Tuesday where more than 80 anti-government protesters were killed last month and promised beseeching crowds that American aid is on the way. Kerry met in Ukraine with the new government’s acting president, prime minister, foreign minister and top parliamentary officials. Speaking to reporters afterward, Kerry urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to stand down and said the U.S. is looking for ways to de-escalate the mounting tensions.

Ball State alumnus prepares for four-month Mars simulation

A 60-year-old Ball State alumnus will experience a simulation of life on Mars, and he’s bringing some fourth-grade students along for the ride. Ron Williams, director of the neuropsychology department at the Fort Wayne Neurological Center, and five other scientists from around the world will join together as an astronaut crew March 21 to simulate life on Mars. This is in conjunction with the University of Hawaii as part of its Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simulation program.

Police: Shooting at school in New Mexico; 2 hurt

ROSWELL, New Mexico— A gunman opened fire Tuesday at a school in New Mexico, leaving at least two children injured before being taken into custody. Officials at a Texas hospital say a 14-year-old boy who was the likely target has been brought there in critical condition. Eric Finley of University of Medical Center says a 13-year-old girl also might be en route in critical condition. Finley says information from nurses treating the boy indicates he was the target of the shooter. The shooting happened at Berrendo Middle School as classes were starting. Roswell police say the suspected shooter was arrested, and the school was placed on lockdown.
