Associated Press: Survivors of Maui fires face power cuts and poor cell service as teams work to find and ID the dead

LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) — Survivors of deadly wildfires on Maui contended with intermittent power and unreliable cell service as they sought help rebuilding their lives. Teams of people, meanwhile, labored to find the dead and identify them. With the death toll already at 106, a mobile morgue unit with additional coroners arrived in Hawaii on Tuesday to help with the grim task of sorting through remains. The governor warned that a new storm could complicate the search and recovery.

Ball State PBS documentary features Anderson, Ind.

Ball State PBS will air a documentary about Anderson on Thursday, Aug. 17. It will be the next installment in the series highlighting great small towns in East Central Indiana. “Now Entering…Anderson” premieres live at 8 p.m. on Ball State PBS, it can also be seen online at ballstatepbs.org and on the PBS app or the Ball State Public Media app. “We are proud to highlight the civic pride and tell the wonderful regional stories of exciting things happening in cities and small towns all over our viewing area,” Dr. Phil Hoffman, assistant dean of media and general manager of Ball State Public Media said.

Delaware County High School Football Preview

The 2023 Delaware County high school football season is right around the corner as week one will begin on August 18. While some teams are looking to continue with what they worked on last season, others are going to have new looks. But the three goals that are the most prevalent are making their school proud, being the best in the county, and making a run in the playoffs.

Delta wins team, Wes-Del’s Armington wins individual at 2023 Delaware County Championship

Going into last year’s Delaware County Championship, Delta was hoping to complete the three-peat as they had won the tournament for two straight seasons. But Yorktown would be named the champions by defeating the Eagles by three shots. “Losing by three strokes, it was really painful,” Delta junior Avery Stinson said. Because of that loss, the Eagles had a goal to become county champions once again. And after all 24 competitors turned in their scorecards following some rainy conditions on Saturday afternoon, the blue and gold were named the 2023 Delaware County champions.

Associated Press: At least 55 people died on Maui. Residents had little warning before wildfires overtook a town

LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) — Hawaii emergency management records show no indication that warning sirens sounded before people ran for their lives from wildfires on Maui that killed at least 55 people and wiped out a historic town. Instead, officials sent alerts to mobile phones, televisions and radio stations — but widespread power and cellular outages may have limited their reach.

Associated Press: Wildfire devastates Hawaii's historic Lahaina Town, a former capital of the kingdom

KAHULUI, Hawaii (AP) — Dissipating smoke and ash revealed the sheer devastation that a wildfire left behind in Lahaina Town, one of Hawaii’s most historic cities and onetime capital of the former kingdom. At least 36 people were killed and hundreds of structures were damaged or destroyed in the blaze that sparked Tuesday and quickly spread throughout the western Maui community of less than 13,000 residents.

Associated Press: Soaring sales of diabetes drug Mounjaro, widely used for weight loss, sends Eli Lilly to new heights

Eli Lilly’s diabetes treatment Mounjaro, which is widely used for weight loss, raked in nearly $1 billion in second-quarter sales, or more than $200 million above what Wall Street had expected. Shares of the drugmaker soared to an all-time-high early Tuesday after Lilly said Mounjaro sales swelled more than 70% since the first quarter to $980 million. Almost all of that came from the U.S., and the company said significant demand was leading to delays in filling orders for some doses.

Associated Press: US loses to Sweden on penalty kicks in its earliest Women's World Cup exit ever

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — The United States played its best game of this Women's World Cup and it wasn't good enough to stop the two-time reigning champions from being eliminated in the round of 16. The Americans' bid to win an unprecedented third consecutive title ended Sunday on penalty kicks. It is the earliest exit in tournament history for the United States, four-time winners of the World Cup.

Ball State hosting Fan Jam to celebrate fall sports

Ball State is hosting the Annual Fan Jam for area families to celebrate fall sports. The event will be on August 12 a Scheumann Stadium, according to a Ball State Athletics Release. Fan Jam will start at 5:30 p.m. and will have food, games, music, activities and autographs involving athletes from every Ball State fall sports team. Admission will be free to all.

After just the third practice back from the offseason, those in the Ball State soccer program gathered together to hear head coach Josh Rife’s closing remarks. The 2021 Mid-American Conference (MAC) Coach of the Year talked about the importance of being battle-tested, and encouraged the Cardinals to continue the energy they’ve brought to camp after just two days back in Muncie.

Associated Press: Indiana abortion clinics stop providing abortions ahead of near-total abortion ban taking effect

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana’s six abortion clinics have stopped providing abortions ahead of the state’s near-total abortion ban officially taking effect and as a petition is pending before the state’s high court asking it to keep the ban on hold while legal action continues, clinic officials said Tuesday. Planned Parenthood’s four Indiana abortion clinics stopped performing abortions Monday in accordance with state guidance that providers received in July alerting them that on or around Tuesday abortion would become illegal in Indiana in clinic settings “with really very, very limited exceptions,” said Rebecca Gibron, CEO of the Planned Parenthood division that includes Indiana.

Associated Press: Relieved Americans escape and move on at the Women's World Cup

AUCKLAND, New Zealand (AP) — The Americans came into the Women’s World Cup as the two-time defending champions and tournament favorites. By the end of the group stage, they are relieved to still be in the competition. “That was stressful. I was like (expletive),” said United States star Megan Rapinoe, using a curse word to describe her emotions after the team squeezed into the knockout stage with a 0-0 draw against Portugal on Tuesday.

Helen Peña selected as Ball State Softball head caoch

As associate head coach at Middle Tennessee State University, Peña led the Blue Raiders to their second-ever Conference USA Tournament title. This gave the team a berth in the NCAA Tuscaloosa Regional Final. Before being defeated in the regional by fifth-seed Alabama, the Blue Raiders won three regional games. This is the most wins in a regional by a Conference USA team since 2014.

Addie Chester: How one small decision led to big achievements

Since she was three years old, Addie Chester’s life was lived through the game of soccer. “I feel like as a kid, it's just kind of what you're good at,” she said. “If you're good at something, you'll keep doing it.” But when she was about to attend Delta High School, she was on the cusp of being done. “Anybody who's played a sport for that long gets burnt out at different times,” she said.

Multiple people were shot late last night on Hackley and Willard

Delaware County 911 Dispatch received a call for multiple people shot in the area of S. Hackley St. and E. Willard St. at 1:14 a.m. on July 30, according to a City of Muncie press release. One 30-year-old male has been confirmed deceased. The Muncie Police Department along with Muncie Fire/EMS responded to the scene, the initial information was that there was a large party at this location.
