Cowan defeats Wes-Del for third straight sectional championship

“Foul Ball, USA, hit the ball the other way, Aruba, uh uh, Jamaica, uh uh Hawaii, uh uh Aloha.” That was one of the chants that the Cowan softball team screamed from their dugout during the 1A Sectional #55 championship game. But when the seventh inning at Daleville Junior/Senior High School came to a close, those chants turned into cheers as the Blackhawks defeated Wes-Del 5-1 and became back-to-back-to-back sectional champions.

Ball State wins first game in MAC Tournament

Grit. Following today’s 7-6 win against No. 2 Central Michigan (33-21, 19-11 MAC), he used it once more. “[The Cardinals] are a gritty bunch who believe in themselves,” Maloney said. “And they've been amazing because we've been short-handed for a long period of time.” With the team going through some adversity this season, yesterday’s win made the Cardinals’ (34-21, 19-11 MAC) first Mid-American Tournament (MAC) victory more than just that. It was a big moment for multiple players and lifted the team's spirits.

NEW YORK (AP) — Tina Turner, the unstoppable singer and stage performer who teamed with husband Ike Turner for a dynamic run of hit records and live shows in the 1960s and ‘70s and survived her horrifying marriage to triumph in middle age with the chart-topping "What's Love Got to Do With It," has died at 83. Turner died Tuesday, after a long illness in her home in Küsnacht near Zurich, Switzerland, according to her manager. She became a Swiss citizen a decade ago.

On a typical Saturday afternoon, the parking lot near 3 Hermanos Supermarket off of Wheeling Avenue in Muncie can be seen filled with people and cars. Music can be heard from open windows of trucks, and people scatter in and out of the small market, either joining or leaving the line that’s formed down the center of the store.

WASHINGTON (AP) — White House negotiators were back at the U.S. Capitol on Tuesday for another day of discussions with House Republicans over raising the nation's debt ceiling. Time is short: there are just days left before the government could run out of cash to pay its bills. The two sides are working to reach a budget compromise before June 1, when Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has said the country could default. The possible outcomes range from bad to apocalyptic, depending on how long the standoff drags on.

Ball State University Earns National Program of the Year Honors at EsportsU Collegiate Awards

Ball State University was awarded Program of the Year honors at the EsportsU Collegiate Awards. Ball State Esports was selected as the best out of more than 3,000 academic institutions. “We are thrilled to receive the Esports Program of the Year Award. This recognition is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our players, coaches, and staff, and it's an honor to be recognized as one of the top programs in the industry,” Dan Marino, esports director at Ball State and head coach of the University’s esports varsity team said. “We're proud of the work we've done this year to earn this award and look forward to continuing to build a program that fosters excellence, sportsmanship, and teamwork.”

OUR VIEW: SGA didn’t RISE to the challenge

Every year, The Daily News assigns a grade to the outgoing Student Government Association (SGA) executive slate based on how effective it was in accomplishing its goals, along with its impact on the Ball State community. This year’s slate, RISE, consisted of Tina Nguyen, who completed her second term as President of SGA and Vice President Monet Lindstrand, who will be returning as vice president in the 2023-24 school year. RISE ran on the main points of increasing diversity, improving campus transportation, increasing awareness for sexual assault and raising student wages.

Bellar wins and Cardinals end up in fourth in the National Golf Invitational

Playing in the first National Golf Invitational, Ball State Men’s Golf finished tied for fourth with their 859 score over three rounds. Sophomore Kash Bellar won the individual title with his 7-under-par performance over three rounds. “It's about time I've had some really good opportunities to win this spring alone, I just didn't capitalize on and didn't take advantage of the final round,” Bellar said. “I think today I just proved to myself that I can be an elite player. That's the best way to show some other people and teams around the country that I am a pretty good player.”

Associated Press: Sanctions against Russia and what the G7 may do to fortify them

HIROSHIMA, Japan (AP) — The Group of Seven advanced economies are expected to announce a new set of sanctions against Russia to try to further hinder its war effort in Ukraine during their summit in Hiroshima, Japan. In traveling to Japan, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will help to drive home the need to better enforce measures meant to stifle Moscow’s war machine. Russia is now the most-sanctioned country in the world, but there are questions about their effectiveness. EU Council President Charles Michel said the plan was to close loopholes and ensure the sanctions are painful for Russia, not for the countries enforcing them.

The David Owsley Museum of Art host annual Art in Bloom

The David Owsley Museum of Art (DOMA) will host its annual springtime fundraiser and exhibition Art in Bloom this weekend on May 20-21. Saturday the museum will be open from 1 to 7 p.m. and Sunday they will be open from 1 to 5 p.m. Admission is free. This will be the eighth year of the exhibit.

Ball State prepares for the inaugural National Golf Invitational

After coming in second place in the Mid-American Conference championship, Ball State Men’s Golf looks to the postseason, playing in the first National Golf Invitational (NGI) tournament hosted by Golfweek. The tournament will be held at the Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa, Arizona. The Cardinals qualified with their two tournament titles this spring. With those wins, Ball State gained almost 30 spots in the national rankings.

Cardinals defeat Southern Indiana

Ball State Baseball defeated in-state opponent Southern Indiana 12-1 last night. This was the final non-conference game of the season for the Cardinals, improving their record to 33-18. After three innings, Ball State had a 9-0 lead.

ZUVER: Adversity shaped the legacy of the 2023 Ball State Women’s tennis team

Three different head coaches during the season. Multiple injuries. The first home loss in three years. A tall task of defending back-to-back Mid-American Conference (MAC) titles. That’s what the Ball State women’s women’s tennis team (22-4, 9-1 MAC) was faced with during the 2023 season. Despite all of that, it was one of the most historic seasons in program history, and covering every match for the Ball State Daily News taught me so much about how to deal with this thing called adversity.

The Muncie Police Department is investigating two off-campus robberies

The Muncie Police Department is investigating two robberies that were reported to have occurred southeast of campus according to an email from the Ball State Public Safety Advisory. The reported time was overnight between midnight and 3:30 a.m. In both cases of the robberies, the suspect approved the victims on foot, displayed a handgun, and demanded cash and belongings.

Wapahani wins 13th Delaware County Title in program history

During the top of the sixth inning of the 2023 Delaware County Championship, the Wapahani Raiders and Delta Eagles were tied at one apiece. Wapahani senior Daniel Blevins, a former Delta student, stepped up to the plate. Until this point, he was zero-for-two on the day. But he would end the contest one-for-three as he destroyed a two-run home run to left field. This helped the Raiders capture their 13th Delaware County Title in program history as they downed the Eagles 4-1.
