After losing power, a container ship ran into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday, causing the bridge to collapse, dropping construction crew and vehicles into the water. Rescue workers pulled out two people, but six remain missing.
Multiple former Cardinals have played women’s sports professionally while current Ball State student-athletes look towards the same goal.
“I’m so proud of them,” Kirtane said. “When we left Ypsilanti, I think the girls really thought they gave up one. So I knew coming in at home we would definitely have a good chance.”
During World War I, women in the United States stepped up to fill the gaps from those who left to fight for their country. Upon their loved one’s return, the motivation to continue the support for their country and their veterans didn’t diminish.
Just two days after its 3-0 loss to Ohio State, Ball State posted a bounce-back road win against Purdue Fort Wayne. The Cardinals’ victory completed the season sweep of the Battle of I-69 and extended their winning streak against their rival to nine.
Despite the loss, Ball State had many highs at the MAC Championship, including winning a handful of individual awards, as senior Suki Pfister was named MAC Specialist of the Year for the third season. Sophomore Zoe Middleton left with four awards: first for beam, first on floor, third on vault and first for all-around with 39.525 total points. Head coach Joanna Saleem won MAC Coach of the Year.
In Ball State's second Mid-American Conference series of the 2024 season, the Cardinals were swept by Kent State at the First Merchants Ballpark Complex.

Ball State President Geoffrey Mearns used his remarks at Ball State’s Board of Trustees meeting to address the concerns and complaints around Senate Bill (SB) 202, which was signed into law by Governor Eric Holcomb March 13. The legislation, which will become effective July 1, is intended to increase “intellectual diversity” in high education across the state.

All of these women had incredible achievements. From being named Ball State’s female athlete of the decade by the Mid-American Conference (MAC) to being Ball State’s first female MAC individual champion to receiving a silver medal at the 1983 Olympic Festival.
The Cardinals were unable to avenge their home loss to Ohio State in the 2023 MIVA Tournament final, dropping a three-set battle that saw the Buckeyes impose their offensive will.
Even in the loss, head coach Brady Sallee was thankful for the crowd that came to support the Cardinals. Regardless of the team feeling like “crud,” Sallee said it is easy to find gratitude in the community who supported Ball State all season long.
