RETIREMENT FROM COACHING

John McGlothin: The story of a 30-Year coaching career

It’s Thursday, February 23. The last practice before Wes-Del’s final regular season game against Elwood. Warriors head coach John McGlothin blows his whistle after each minute and tells his team to switch shooters. The Warriors are partner shooting. “We do it at least three times a week,” McGlothin said. “Lots of shots, working on our individual game…I felt like when I was a younger coach, my teams didn’t take enough time just getting shots up.” For the winningest coach in Wes-Del history, this is what the winter weeknights have looked like for the last 30 years. But following the 2022-23 season, that routine will end with his retirement.

CARTER: Delaware County's most improved boys high school basketball players

When a new season of high school basketball comes around, people wonder what players will stand out. To some, it’s their skill level, their attitude or just how they play the game. Since taking over the beat writer position for Delaware County high school boys basketball earlier this season, multiple players have stuck out to me. This list is, in my opinion, the players who have improved the most from last season.

Wes-Del defeats Eastbrook on a special night for Warriors head coach

On Friday night, Wes-Del took on the Eastbrook Panthers. Before the game started, each Warrior walked across the court with their grandparents. Wes-Del head coach John McGlothin thought that was the only ceremony taking place. The PA announcer then told the crowd that coach Mcglothin would be retiring following the end of this season. Then numerous former players and coaches walked through the gymnasium doors to hug and talk to the 30-year career coach.
