BASEBALL: 3 named as Freshmen All-Americans

The Ball State baseball team continues to be honored for its season, as Collegiate Baseball selected pitcher Zach Plesac, catcher Jarett Rindfleisch and outfielder Alex Call to its Freshmen All-America Team.Plesac finished the season ranked fourth in the nation with 12 wins and was previously named as the publication’s Mid-American Conference Freshman Pitcher of the Year as well as to the All-America Third Team.

BASEBALL: Freshman pitcher named to Louisville Slugger All-America Third Team

Ball State freshman pitcher Zach Plesac continues to be recognized for his first season of college baseball.After being awarded the 2014 MAC Freshman Pitcher of the Year, Plesac was named to the Louisville Slugger All-America Third Team.Plesac will join teammate Sean Godfrey on the All-American Third Team, as the duo became the eighth and ninth Cardinals to be honored with the selections.The right-hander finished the season ranked fourth in the nation with 12 wins, while pitching to a 2.11 earned-run average in 85.1 innings of work.

BASEBALL: Cardinals finish season with sweep

The Ball State baseball team ended its 2014 regular season today with a 10-2 victory at Northern Illinois.With the win, the Cardinals finished the year 38-16 overall, while boasting a 22-4 mark inside the Mid-American Conference.Clay Manering got the start for Ball State, and the senior southpaw went five innings, allowing one run on five hits to earn his third win of the season.Catcher Jarret Rindfleisch opened the scoring for the Cardinals with a RBI double in the top of the first inning, and a throwing error on the Huskies in the third led to three more Cardinal runs.After the Huskies posted the team's first run of the game on a RBI double in the bottom of the fourth, the Cardinals answered with an Alex Maloney two-run triple in the top of the fifth to make the score 6-1.Back-to-back RBI singles from Nick Hollowell and Alex Call in the seventh extended Ball State’s lead to 8-1, and Matt Eppers added to the onslaught with a two RBI double to make the score 10-1.A bottom of the ninth-inning home run by the Huskies cut the score to 10-2, but it was as close as the team would get, as the Cardinals held on for the sweep.The Cardinals will open MAC Tournament play

Kennedy gives Ball State walk-off win over Kent State

Tied at four in the bottom of the ninth inning this afternoon, third baseman Sean Kennedy knocked a bases loaded single back up the middle to give Ball State the walk-off win, 5-4, over visiting Kent State.With the win, head coach Rich Maloney tied former Ball State baseball coach Pete Quinn for the most wins in the program's history with 323.Pitcher Scott Baker started the game for the Cardinals, allowing three runs on nine hits over seven innings of work.Kent State broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the ninth to take a one-run lead, but a dropped pop-up in the bottom of the inning opened the door for Ball State.The Cardinals proceeded to load the bases following the error, and Kennedy ultimately delivered with the game winning hit.Zach Plesac, who came into the game in relief for Ball State earned his 11th win

BASEBALL: Ball State eyes MAC Championship

Through 11 conference games, the Ball State baseball team is off to its best start since 2010. At 9-2, Ball State trails Central Michigan by one victory for first place in the Mid-American conference’s West Division.MAC preseason polls, voted on by the league’s head coaches, tabbed Ball State to win the MAC West — a feat the team has not accomplished since 2006.

BASEBALL: Ball State defeats Toledo, takes weekend series

After splitting two earlier games, conference foes Ball State and Toledo squared off Sunday.The Cardinals scored two runs in the first inning thanks to solo home runs by Ryan Spaulding and Jarrett Rindfleisch.Brandon Estep’s two-run RBI single extended the Cardinals’ lead to 4-0 in the fourth, but the Rockets answered with two of its own in the bottom of the inning.
