GREAT WHITE HYPE: Basketball needs to focus on its future

On Saturday the Ball State University women's basketball team lost to Indiana University in Worthen Arena despite leading for a majority of the game. While the loss hurts, the full effect of it won't be felt until March 9. That's a day known to NCAA basketball fans as "selection Sunday.

Muncie concludes mayoral mystery

Almost two weeks after elections, Muncie learned who will be its new mayor: Jim Mansfield. The Delaware County Election Board announced the democratic candidate beat Sharon McShurley by an 11-vote margin during a meeting on Friday. Neither candidate attended the meeting and could not be reached at home for comment during the weekend.

Haunted tour features Elliott, Shively

Ball State University students had the chance to discover the ghosts on and around campus through a haunted tour led by the anthropology club. The tours were late Friday and Saturday, which started at the corner of McKinley and Riverside avenues and made its way down University Avenue to its final stop: Guthrie Park near Ball Memorial Hospital.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Hoosiers slip away from BSU

Tracy Roller sat in her chair and leaned over the post-game press table as her hand rested on her chin, almost as if to catch the words as she spoke. Following her team's 76-71 loss to Indiana University, a contest in which Ball State University led by 16 in the first half, Roller looked more than bummed out.

SOCCER: Players earn Academic All-MAC honors

The Mid-American Conference named four Ball State University soccer players to the Academic All-MAC team Friday. Seniors Angie Heyer and Sarah Leibel, and juniors Rachael Murphy and Emily Rein earned the honors. It is the first time that Ball State had four players named to the Academic All-MAC team.

Students, faculty share opinions of Ball State's newest addition

As the newest addition to the Ball State University academic calendar approaches, some students are beginning to finalize their pre-Thanksgiving Break schedules to accommodate canceled classes. Some students intend on going to class, and others see Fruesday as a holiday in itself and a reason to skip class.

CROSS COUNTRY: Runner to compete at national championship

While the season is complete for most of the Ball State University cross country team, one runner has one race left. Sophomore Ali Bishel will compete at the 2007 Division I Women's NCAA Cross Country Championships at 12:55 p.m. today at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course in Terre Haute.

SWIMMING AND DIVING: Cards win invitational

The Ball State University swimming and diving teams won more than half of the events en route to a win at the Dog Coers Invitational this weekend. The Cardinals won 22 of the 40 events at the two-day meet, defeating Grand Valley State University and the University of Findlay.

Voter says officials abused his rights

As the Deleware County Election Board meeting drew to a close on Friday, a Muncie resident stood up and addressed the board even though it was not on the meeting's agenda. Voter Robert Lewis, who lives in precinct 18, approached the board with a complaint about being treated unequally.

BSA unites Muncie, campus

The Black Student Association was able to bring students together, even from far away universities, and gave them a forum to discuss topics such as the problems facing black students. BSA President Ebony Strong said the conference went well and students benefited a lot from the conferences, which included a fashion show on Friday and guest speakers on Saturday.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Defensive struggles lead to loss

After experiencing her team's second loss of the season Saturday, Ball State University women's basketball coach Tracy Roller said it wasn't hard to figure out what her team must do to improve. "It doesn't take a genius to realize that Louisville scored 81 points, Indiana scored 76 and Wright State scored 52," Roller said.

SOFTBALL: Four players sign letters of intent to BSU

Four players signed national letters of intent to play for the Ball State University softball team Friday. The players will join the team in 2009. Kim Mazzapica is a pitcher and outfielder from Palm Harbor, Fla. This summer she went 15-4 with an .073 earned run average with her club team.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Ball State loses to Indiana after big early lead

Lacking a sense of urgency until late in the second half, Ball State women's basketball team lost its second game of the season Saturday night 76-71 to Indiana University. The Cardinals used a 20-4 run to take its biggest lead of the game, a 33-17 advantage with 6:38 remaining in the first half.
