Following Ball State University's 17-point loss in its last home game, acting head coach Lisa McDonald challenged her players to focus on the fundamentals that had made them successful in the past. Ball State University took another step toward safety on campus Saturday. The text message alert system was tested and successfully expanded the university's ability to contact students in case of an emergency. This is a big step forward from the system's test in October, when it took 17 minutes for 4,000 phones to receive messages.

Ali Bishel picked up right where she left off. The Ball State University sophomore won the 800-meter run at the 2008 Ball State University Open Friday. Her time of 2:21.47 was a personal best. "It felt good to compete," said Bishel, who also runs cross country for the Cardinals.

GYMNASTICS: Coach's BSU debut finishes with loss

In new coach Nadalie Walsh's debut with Ball State University, the Cardinals lost 189.825-185.450 Sunday at Western Michigan University. "I felt really good about the girls," Walsh said. "They had a lot of energy ... they weren't scared or nervous." Walsh was hired during the summer after spending the previous four years as the head coach of her Alma Mater, the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Cards claim first MAC win of season

In Ball State University's conference-opening loss to the University of Toledo, captains Anthony Newell and Peyton Stovall were forced to get by without much help from their supporting cast. That was not a problem Sunday afternoon. The Cardinals got double-figure scoring from five players as they defeated Central Michigan University 82-71 for their first Mid-American Conference victory of the season, their second win overall.

Senior wins crown

Last year, Tara Choate and her roommate agreed to compete for the crown at the Miss Ball State Scholarship Program. Then, Choate's roommate contracted mononucleosis, and she competed without her friend in the first pageant of her life, she said, becoming the first runner-up.

Hamilton County might see increased train travel because of a group of Ball State University students. Journalism instructor Richard Shoemaker said 14 students are working with the Indiana Transportation Museum in Noblesville to increase tourism in that area.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Cardinals struggle in weekend doubles tournament

Ball State University women's tennis seniors Jennifer Pollack and Haly Calderwood did not want to make a complete waste out of a weekend tournament in Bloomington. The pair, whose team entered Saturday's play winless in nine matches, earned the Cardinals' one win of the Indiana Doubles Tournament with a 9-7 victory against Bowling Green State University's Andrea Volle and Jenna Nussbaum.

For the past year, Ball State University women's tennis head coach Kathy Bull said her team's main goal has been improving on doubles play. "In the matches that we lost last spring, we really didn't secure the doubles point," said Bull, who is currently in her 19th year as head coach.

FOOTBALL: Bowl ticket sales put BSU in the red

Almost 8,000 tickets for the International Bowl went unsold by Ball State University, a school official said. Ticket Manager Rob Richards said Ball State "used just over 2,000 tickets" for Saturday's football game against Rutgers University. The Mid-American Conference had a contract with the International Bowl in which the participating school, Ball State, was responsible for 10,000 tickets at $40 each.

The commitment to women's soccer at the University of Cincinnati was the deciding factor in Ball State University soccer coach Michelle Salmon's decision to leave the Cardinals. The two-time Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year was officially named the head coach at Cincinnati Thursday after two seasons at Ball State.

SRCS helps students pay for textbooks

It is not uncommon for students to tell professors they cannot complete reading assignments because they cannot afford the necessary textbooks - a solution is out there. Ball State University history professor Frederick Suppe said he often has students approach him near the beginning of the semester to tell him that the textbooks are out of their price range and they don't know what to do about it.

Applications increase 30%

Freshman applications have increased for the third year in a row, but enrollment numbers don't reflect the increase, according to Tom Taylor, vice president for enrollment, marketing and communications. As of December, admissions had received 10,357 applications, which is a 30 percent increase from Fall 2006.

Reported crimes increase over break

Reported crimes on and near Ball State University's campus spiked during Winter Break, which is a trend that has developed over recent years, according to police. Gene Burton, director of public safety, said the increase in crime, most of which were burglaries and thefts, is most likely because of students leaving the campus area during Winter Break, leaving their valuables unprotected.
