BASEBALL: Offense galore in Cards 2-2 weekend

Offense was the name of the game for Ball State University this weekend. In a four-game series with New Mexico State University the Cardinals compiled a total of 64 runs, an average of 16 per game. Like last weekend, Ball State dropped the first two games of the series 8-7, 24-19.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Cards tie record for season losses

This time, turnovers were the undoing of Ball State University. Despite three players in double figures in scoring and hot shooting, the Cardinals fell 75-64 to Eastern Michigan University, turning the ball over 19 times. Coach Billy Taylor was not available for comment after the game.

MEN'S TENNIS: Purdue beats BSU for seventh loss

Coming out of its 6-1 loss at Purdue University Friday, the Ball State University men's tennis team reminded its coach, Bill Richards, how the team has lost seven matches this season. "It was a carbon copy of other losses we had this year," Richards said.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Cards win two in Tennessee

Kathy Bull has been head coach of the Ball State University women's tennis team for 21 years. After the Cardinals' match against the University of Memphis Friday, Bull said the postgame headache she experienced was a first of her career. "Memphis is a team that are loud, they cheer, they were chest bumping," Bull said.

SOFTBALL: Wasted chances hinder Cardinals

Wasted opportunities cost the Ball State University softball team this weekend, as it lost three of its five games at the UT-Martin Tournament. The missed opportunities cost the Cardinals (7-8) in their second game Saturday against the host University of Tennessee at Martin.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Worthen crowd record shattered

Following the No. 14 Ball State University men's volleyball team's sweep against No. 7 UCLA on Saturday, coach Joel Walton shook hands with Bruins' coach Al Scates and then immediately looked for a microphone. With record crowd at Worthen Arena, Walton wanted to make sure all 3,572 people in attendance knew how much their support meant to the Cardinals.

Best Buddies encourages volunteerism

Using plastic leis and kazoos, a motivational speaker explained the importance of a positive attitude and overcoming obstacles during a presentation at Pruis Hall. Motivational speaker Kevin Wanzer, the event's main presenter, used anecdotes and games to explain his ALOHA message of attitude, love, overcoming obstacles and having a sense of humor to the audience.

BSA ends month of events

Black Student Association ended its string of events in recognition of Black History Month with "The Black Resolution: Are you willing to make a change?" The event, which was Friday in L.A. Pittenger Student Center's ballroom, focused on derogatory language.

WOMEN'S BASKTBALL: Sophomore sets BSU record

When Audrey McDonald left the court Saturday, she knew she'd had a big game. She didn't realize, however, that her sharp shooting did more than propel the Cardinals to a 74-69 win against Western Michigan University. Making nine of her 12 3-point attempts, McDonald broke the Ball State University women's basketball team's record for 3-pointers in a game and tied the Mid-American Conference mark.

TRACK AND FIELD: Cards place 4th after winning six events

Entering the second day of competition at the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships tied for first place, the Ball State University track and field team was in prime position to vie for a top finish. The Cardinals then dropped three spots to finish fourth of the 12 teams despite several outstanding individual performances.

SWIMMING AND DIVING: Ball State falls in MAC championships

Though they finished last at the Mid-American Conference men's swimming and diving championships, the Ball State University coaches were happy with the Cardinals' performance. The Cardinals finished last among the four MAC teams at the conference championship and ninth out of 10 teams overall at the meet, which also included the Sun Belt Conference.

Comedians look to L.A.

At first Ryan Ehresman was anxious about the success of Wednesday's "A Night of Comedy" show in Ball State University's Pruis Hall. "You just think no one is going to come," Ehresman said. "I was worried the entire semester, but I had a good feeling backstage that reminded me of Y2K, when 10 minutes before the world's going to end, you stop worrying.

Leap Day

If it weren't for Leap Days, eventually we would celebrate Christmas in July. It takes the Earth 365 and a quarter days to orbit around the sun, Assistant Professor of Geography Elizabeth Vaughan said. After four years we have accumulated an extra day. She said we use the month of February to add that day back to keep the seasons and calendar in sync.

BASEBALL: Cards fly out to the southwest

For the first time in the almost 90-year history of Ball State University baseball, the team will play New Mexico State University. Beginning at 2 p.m. Ball State will play a four-game weekend series against the school. The Cardinals (2-2) boarded a flight Thursday afternoon that took them the close to 1,400 miles to Carlsbad, N.

McKinley's completion uncertain

After three years of gradual construction, the next phase of the McKinley Safety Improvement Project is nowhere in sight. Jim Lowe, director of engineering and operations, said the project's time frame would depend on the passage of federal funding. Because of a rigid schedule of events, Lowe said, the Indiana Department of Transportation would need to receive all plans, drawings and specifications for the project by November in order to begin construction the following summer.
