Police were out in force as Ball State University students returned for another year, and officers on the lookout for alcohol violations found plenty to keep them busy. Indiana State Police Sgt. Rod Russell said during opening weekend in Delaware County, 50 people were arrested for minor consumption of alcohol, 20 were for driving while intoxicated and 17 were for public intoxication.
At approximately 6:10 p.m., Ball State University police officers pulled over two Muncie residents in a blue Dodge Neon for running a red stoplight at the intersection of University and McKinley avenues, University Police officer Matt Gaither said.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - With the help of a $250,000 reward, a Ball State University alumnus finally reunited with the muscle car he sold years ago to help keep his family's national pizza chain business afloat. John Schnatter - the founder of Papa John's pizza who graduated from Ball State in 1984 - sold the gold-and-black 1971 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 for $2,800 in 1983.
Many students on campus Monday and Tuesday were intrigued by the sight of 155 pairs of black military boots scattered on the lawn beside the Shafer Tower. The goal of the display, "Eyes Wide Open," was to raise awareness about the repercussions of war. Each pair of shoes represented a soldier from Indiana who has died in the war in the Middle East.
Junior Eric Steger, a member of the Ball State men's golf team, is currently tied for ninth place out of 312 golfers in the U.S. Amateur Championships at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla. Steger is participating in the event because he won the sectional qualifier at Coldstream Country Club in Cincinnati, OH.
Pruis Hall reached its maximum capacity Tuesday night when about 650 students attended Steve Hofstetter's comedy show. The show was part of Welcome Week, which was organized by the University Program Board. Senior telecommunications major and director of UPB Sam Maples said Welcome Week started the semester on a good note, with students of all years participating in the events organized by the Board.

The Mid-American Conference coaches don't think this cross country season is the year for Ball State University. Ball State was ranked 11th out of 12 teams in the conference's preseason coaches poll released on Tuesday evening. The defending MAC champion Miami University was picked as the favorite.
Art professors took the trash-to-treasure concept into practice in choosing pieces for "Art for Change - Reclaim, Reuse, Renew," now on display at the Atrium Gallery in the Art and Journalism Building. As part of the exhibit, professors looked at applications and photos of works from artists from around the world who took various items to remake them into pieces of art.
Students will once again have an outlet to voice their concerns regarding topics such as abortion thanks to a campus group dedicated to promoting awareness on the issue. The group, Students for Life, has a mission to "educate their members, as well as the Ball State community, about why they value life in all its forms," according to its Web site.
Six months ago, Ball State University students and administrators first heard about H1N1 in the news as a few remote cases appeared in Mexico. Since then, college students have been named a high-risk group for H1N1 by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, while campus officials have been preparing for a flu season intensified by the first global pandemic in 41 years.
Ball State University's Women's and Gender Studies program began this semester with a new title and director. Lisa Pellerin, associate professor of sociology, started her position as director of the program last week. Pellerin, who has worked at Ball State since 2001, said she decided to apply for the job because it sounded like an interesting challenge.

Several new businesses have been brought to downtown Muncie in an attempt to rejuvenate the area. One of the newest additions is Two Johnny's, which opened in May. The restaurant features homemade food, a variety of drinks and live jazz every month. Matt Zacek, owner of Two Johnny's, said he decided to open the store after finding a good location in downtown's Rose Court.
Ball State has started classes and students are moved in, but some students from the Honors College aren't living where Housing and Residence Life had once expected them to. The newly renovated DeHority Complex, which first opened in 1960 as four all-women's halls, was expected to house 600 men and women in the Honors College.
Ball State University students and faculty say they are excited about the renovations made to the L.A. Pittenger Student Center's Tally Food Court and plan to return soon. The new dining hall opened Monday after more than a year of construction. Though its lunch service wasn't as crowded as the Atrium's yesterday, the Tally, and especially its full-service Taco Bell, maintained a constant stream of customers throughout its opening day.
The women's volleyball alumnae team gave everything they had against the 2009-2010 team, but came up just short of an upset. The current squad won in straight sets 25-14, 25-12, 25-19 Saturday night in Worthen Arena. "This is so much fun. It's great to come back and get to play again at home," alumna Sarah (Obras) Steele said.
