OUR VIEW: Show up tonight

Not that you didn't know, but Ball State University begins its football season tonight with a home game against the University of North Texas. Last year was, for lack of a better word, magical. Despite the last two games of the season, in which the Cardinals were embarrassed, the Ball State community watched as one of the perennial punching bags of college football slowly climbed up the rankings each week and entered BCS talks for the first time ever.

While sitting in one of my courses (Asian Foreign Relations), my professor began to talk about the women in Saudi Arabia. There, he said, the women do not believe that they are subjected to wearing a veil by force, though it would be culturally unacceptable for them to not wear them.

Anticipation for the opening of Zita Kramer's new restaurant, Crawdaddy's, has been high. "We've had a lot of interest from students, faculty and other people in the Village who've been waiting for us to open," said Kramer, manager of Crawdaddy's Cajun restaurant.

Ball State faces Valparaiso tonight in West Lafayette in the Boilermaker Challenge Cup. The match will mark the fifth meeting between the two schools, the most recent being a 1-0 season-opening loss for the Cardinals last season in coach Michael Lovett's debut.

Taking time to look at things and interact with the environment is something Paul Laseau tried to introduce to his students when he taught at Ball State eight years ago. "A lot of what is important for artists is what they see, what they notice in the world around them," Laseau, a retired architecture professor, said.

Student organizations on campus are getting ready for the "Best Week" of the year, which is the the theme of Ball State University's Homecoming Week. The Homecoming Steering Committee had its first meeting Wednesday night at the Alumni Center, where information about this year's events was shared with the student organizations that attended.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Rio could miss up to four weeks with injury

The coaching staff and team doctors are being cautiously optimistic on the condition of Ball State University starting libero Alyssa Rio. Rio, who was injured on Friday night in the season opener against No. 19 Purdue University, could miss up to four weeks with a hamstring injury, Ball State coaches said Tuesday.

Student Government Association is trying to add more student voices to university policy decisions. SGA President Beth Cahill said her slate is working to fill the many vacant student positions in the University Senate system. The University Senate is made up of faculty, staff, students and community members.

With a background as an offensive coordinator, Stan Parrish notices his team's defenders most when they cause havoc to his unit. Parrish couldn't help but be impressed by defensive end Robert Eddins this offseason. After the Spring Game, Parrish said the offensive line couldn't block him.

You know, it's amazing how much smarter your parents become in the five years between 16 years old and 21 years old. I was just talking to my dad about recovering from illness - I've been battling flu the last six days or so - and complaining about not being able to get up and go to class.
