MUNCIE, Ind.(NewsLink) - The Mid-American Conference announced Saturday morning that they will be canceling all fall sports this season due to COVID-19, becoming the first conference to cancel their season.
The news was reported earlier today by watchstadium.com.
Pete Thamel, a national sports reporter with Yahoo Sports, confirmed the news in a tweet saying, “Can confirm the Stadium report that the MAC has cancelled football this fall. MAC presidents had a call at 9 a.m. this morning, and the finances didn’t make sense anymore. The league had just five buy games with Power Five schools remaining. Look for the spring option to be explored.”
Saturday’s meeting was called after Northern Illinois decided to cancel their season in a league meeting on Thursday. The league will consider rescheduling the season in the spring.
Thamel also tweeted that the Big Ten presidents were meeting today to discuss their conference, saying "Big Ten presidents are meeting today. All options are on the table. There's some presidential momentum for cancelling the football season. It's unknown if there's enough support to make that decision today."
