4-year-old fatally shot on Muncie’s southside
MUNCIE, Ind. – A four-year-old boy died from a gunshot wound Monday afternoon.
According to a press release, police received a 911 call around 12 p.m. on Nov. 14, regarding a child injured by a gunshot wound. The 4-year-old boy was transported to Ball Memorial Hospital to be treated where he later died.
The incident took place at the 1500 block of S. Burlington Drive. The child was a dependent of Joseph Jackson and Alycia Smith. Smith also has a 2-year-old daughter.
According to the Affidavit, while Jackson was on the first floor of the two story residence, Smith was in a bedroom on the second floor with the two kids. There was a 9mm Glock 19 sitting inside a dollhouse that was on top of a small table in the bedroom.
Smith said she was in the bedroom with the children, but had her back turned away when the child grabbed the gun and fired it. Jackson said he then went upstairs to grab the child to bring downstairs. Smith called 911 and CPR was performed until Officers arrived.
When talking to investigators, Smith said that Jackson previously would leave the gun in places where the child could access it. He said he had left the gun sitting on the dollhouse “at least 10 times.”
