Week nine preview

Ten Mid-American Conference teams are playing games within the conference this week while the Ball State defense will again face a running quarterback Juice Williams when it plays Illinois. Ball State (5-3) vs. Illinois (5-3) Three weeks ago Central Michigan quarterback Dan LeFevour ran for 146 yards and a touchdown against Ball State.



Student heals from infection

Although a student on campus has contracted a staph infection, Ball State University students and staff should not be alarmed, Kent Bullis, a physician at Ball State's Amelia T. Wood Student Health Center, said. Katie Coleman, a junior accounting and risk management and insurance major who was diagnosed with Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) two weeks ago, said her infection was not contagious because the wound has healed.


OUR VIEW: Enough already

We are concerned. More concerned than Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Tom Collins appears to be that 20 percent of recently drug-tested athletes failed. It's not unfortunate - it's a cry for stronger leadership, better help and stricter policies for athletes and the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.


BEWILDERED SOCIETY: Don't deface BSU's campus

While strolling through campus earlier this month, I noticed a campus map tagged with graffiti and a bus shelter nailed with paintballs. Days later on the Saturday morning of Homecoming, a village businessman was covering a spot on his building with fresh paint.


Last of the Epkeys

In the heart of the February 2006 dual-match season, more than 100 fans gathered to support three Ball State University brothers as they stepped onto the Indiana University tennis courts. Senior Jarrod Epkey, and his two older brothers Joe Epkey and Tony Epkey, grew up in Greenwood, a 45-minute drive from Bloomington, their whole lives but never expected to have their friends, family and alumni outnumber the Indiana fan base 3-to-1.



Senators propose solutions to improve student safety

Two pieces of legislation were introduced at Wednesday's Ball State University Student Government Association meeting, which if passed, would begin the process of improving student safety on the south end of campus. The bills discuss fixing the sidewalks in the Quad and finding a way to reduce speeding near Woodworth Complex.


More than 300 zombies invade BSU this weekend

In the world of zombie lore, it doesn't take much to become one of the wandering undead. One bite from one of the stiff, flesh-seeking creatures, and you'll undoubtedly join the ranks of zombies terrorizing the human race. Thursday, zombies will infest the Ball State University campus as part of the mega-game Humans vs.


Collins: drug test results 'unfortunate'

While 20 percent of tested Ball State University athletes tested positive for banned substances in a drug test, Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Tom Collins said he does not think it reflects on the athletics department. The Oct. 5 drug test found five of the 25 athletes who were tested had positive results for banned substances.


SPEAK SOFTLY: Gun, violence threats must be taken seriously

The last few years have forever altered the way we look at guns in this country, especially in respect to schools. How did we get to this point where we are now? We seem to be at a place now where a kid bringing a gun into his classroom may not even make the front page of the local newspaper.



OUR VIEW: Big investment

It's good to be president, especially when Ball State University offers its president a three-year contract extension loaded with expensive bonuses. President Jo Ann Gora accepted a good offer from Ball State and could make more than $2 million by the time the contract ends five years from now and all her bonuses are paid.


Registration for etiquette dinner to close today

The Ball State University Career Center will teach students why knowing which fork to use is important at the Professional Etiquette Dinner. Students who wish to attend should register no later than today in Lucina Hall Room 220, King said. They should be prepared to pay the $10 fee with cash, check or credit upon registering, she said.


Garfield licensor to speak at BSU as part of series

A representative from Paws Inc., the creators of Garfield the Cat, will speak from 3 to 4 p.m. Wednesday in Whitinger Business Building Room 144. Tammy Estep, director of external relations, said Gay Nation, the director of sales for Paws Inc. will discuss her job and her experience working with Jim Davis, the creator of Garfield.


Groovy Gourds

Gourds are not only a mystery to people who venture out to their local pumpkin patch in search of the perfect pumpkin, but also to the people who sell them. Linda Hiatt, co-owner of Hiatt Farms, said she sells an assortment of gourds in a variety of amusing shapes, which even perplex herself.



50 brave cold for Mole Day picnic

Five grills sent an aroma of roasting meat to the outreaches of Scheumann Stadium's parking lot Tuesday. Huddled together under a pavilion, about 50 people braved the chilly breeze for a chance to win an iPod Nano Video or an Xbox 360, both of which were given as door prizes at the Mole Day picnic.


President's contract extended

President Jo Ann Gora's contract was extended three years beyond the original expiration date, according to Ball State University officials. Kevin Burke, director of university communications, said the Board of Trustees voted unanimously to extend Gora's contract, which originally set to expire in August 2009, until June 30, 2012.


FOOTBALL: Miller, Crawford named MAC West Players of Week

Generally considered one of the better punters in the nation, Ball State University junior Chris Miller received his first Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week honor Monday. "I thought [the people who choose the player of the week] had something against me, like a vengeance or something," Miller said with a laugh.


Senator says Indiana has 'brain drain' problem

Sen. Sue Errington discussed the "brain drain" and what Indiana politicians plan to do about it Tuesday. Zac Davis, Ball State University Student Government Association treasurer, said the event was part of the organization's Political Speaker Series. Politicians are asked to speak at Ball State, and they fund their trip themselves, Davis said.


Late Loop North

MITS will be adding a new route to the Late Loop. Starting Oct. 25, the North Late Loop will be added to the loop that already takes students from campus to downtown Muncie, Jeff Phipps, owner of Bygone's Bar and Grill, said. The new loop runs opposite of the original loop and will concentrate on McGalliard Road, Phipps said.


SOFTBALL: Ball State hires new assistant coach

Another coach was added to the Ball State University softball team this year. The team named Caroline Cubbage as a graduate assistant coach for the 2008 season. Cubbage is the third coach on the team's roster along with head coach Craig Nicholson and assistant coach Stephanie DeFeo.


Videos to inform patients about diabetes

A group of Ball State University professors worked with members from Ball Memorial Hospital and TelePlex Communications Inc. to create a series of short videos on diabetes that will air in the hospital's waiting rooms. Family Medicine Clinic representative Jenni Flanagan said the clinic wanted to take advantage of the time patients spend waiting by informing them on important topics.
