CMD raises BSU national profile

The Center for Media Design opened a new facility Tuesday in New York City, giving Ball State University a presence in the metropolis, which is largely known as the media center of the U.S. Mike Bloxham, CMD director of insight and research, said the new Media Insight Center would concentrate on a variety of media research, including usability, design and emerging medias.



FOOTBALL: Week 10 Preview

Ball State vs. Indiana Game Time: Noon Saturday on the Big Ten Network Two teams that have a chance to become eligible for bowl games for the first since the 1990s will play each other Saturday. Indiana's last bowl game was the 1993 Independence Bowl, while Ball State's last bowl appearance was the 1996 Las Vegas Bowl.


ANALYZE THIS: Texting takes over phones

Look around campus today. You will no doubt see several people with phones plastered to their ears, even more with iPods and a good amount with their cell phones open as their fingers fly from button to button as they text others. Very few will be enjoying their surroundings or conversing with others.

MEN'S GOLF: Cards place 5th at final event

After six tournaments, the Ball State University men's golf team finally concluded its fall season. The Cardinals took fifth place out of 17 teams at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate in Las Cruces, N.M. Tuesday. Despite being in 10th place going into the final round, the Cardinals jumped five places after shooting a team score of 279 in the last 18 holes.



OUR VIEW: Good season start

It's basketball season, and Ball State University kicked it off right with the first basketball "Fan Jam," a meet-and-greet event that should become annual. The Tuesday-night event in Worthen Arena gave players and coaches the opportunity to start the season off on the right foot by bonding with fans and garnishing positive publicity.


FOOTBALL: Ball State prepares for IU's quarterback

When Indiana University quarterback Kellen Lewis entered last year's game at Ball State University in the second quarter, a proverbial weakness was exploited in the Cardinals' defense. Trailing 23-7 at halftime, Lewis led the Hoosiers' offense to 17 second-half points and a one-point victory.

The hundreds of fans who attended the event had the chance to meet the men's and women's basketball teams. The spectators were divided on which team they were more excited for as some said the men's, some said the women's and some said both teams are equally exciting.


Cardinal Vision debuts MiXx show

The MiXx, a new student-produced show, will air on Cardinal Vision tonight at 9:30 p.m., Executive Producer Starla Loyd said. The show aims for serious coverage of important issues through panel discussions and reporting, comedy with skits and shows and local talent, she said.



Dinner teaches students table manners

Ball State University Career Center representatives emphasized the importance of manners Tuesday at the professional etiquette dinner. Participants were divided into two groups in the Alumni Center for a networking lecture before the meal. James Mitchell, assistant director of the Career Center, said 90 percent of all people are afraid to mingle with people they do not know, but 99 percent of executives consider social skills important to business.


Mills, Davis give U.N.I.T.E.D. platform update

When the U.N.I.T.E.D. Initiative slate campaigned to be elected to the Ball State University Student Government Association, they had 33 platform ideas they wanted to complete. Each item was put into one of three tiers with all of the items needing to be addressed by the end of October.


Flea market frenzy

Booths filled to the brim with cookie jars, guitars, jewelry and Garfield the Cat memorabilia await those willing to haggle and search for unique collectibles and bargains not easily found online or in retail stores. Located just off of Exit 34 in Daleville, Ind.


SGA, MITS consider new late loop plan

Although the North Late Loop is set to begin Thursday, another late loop plan is under consideration. The Ball State University Student Government Association and the Muncie Indiana Transit System are considering combining the downtown loop with the north loop to make a "figure 8" route.

Children trick-or-treat on campus

Children, candy and costumes filled residence halls as Ball State University students passed out candy to trick-or-treaters. Students were able to hand out candy to children from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. Participating students put a sign on their door to let children know they would pass out candy.


Text test encounters initial delay

Joe Cermak n Chief Reporter During Monday's testing of the text message alert system, Ball State University overcame an initial delay and recorded a time of 17 minutes to send about 4,000 texts. Loren Malm, assistant director security, policy, systems and assessment, said the delay was caused by a simple coding error attributed to the large number of message recipients.


WCRD plays music outside of library

The south side of Bracken Library was filled with music, calling those within earshot to the building, as part of a collaborative effort between WCRD and the library on Tuesday. WCRD promotions manager Jade Sullivan said the radio station was doing a live remote to support Bracken and to encourage people to read while they listen to the radio.


BASKETBALL: Meet players, coaches at Fan Jam

Fans will have the opportunity to meet players and coaches from the Ball State University men's and women's teams today at Worthen Arena. The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics will host "Fan Jam," from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. The free event will be similar to the football "Fan Jam" the department has held the past two years, said Chris Taylor, director of communications and marketing.


LAST YEAR ON EARTH: Privacy fosters desensitization

I spent a week and a half of my summer with my friends Ethan and Richard in Southern California, and it was full of new sights and experiences. At Mission Beach, tightrope walkers dug posts into the sand and danced on air, twirling hoops and batons. In Hillcrest, San Diego's "gay district," rainbow flags flew over Afghan, Greek, Armenian and Thai restaurants, considered by locals to be the area's best dining.
