Woodworth to collect for A Better Way

Many Ball State University residence halls are doing their part to help the community with different service projects and donations over the holidays. Professor of Psychological Science David Perkins said he helped organize a donation drive in Woodworth Complex to collect items for A Better Way an organization that helps victims, mainly women and children, of domestic violence who have lost their permanent housing.


When pets go to Heaven

Junior Amanda Degard awoke one day this summer to her mother's explanation that her Rottweiler, Bandit, had died. "We had him sleep in the basement ... My mother and I went to the basement, and he was in fact dead," she said. Because the veterinarian's office had the body after the autopsy, Degard's family had no memorial service for Bandit, although she remembers happy memories with her dog, she said.


BASEBALL: Six intent letters signed for 2009 season

Prosecutor still to file charges

Charges are pending for five Ball State University affiliated women who supposedly beat an Ivy Tech student at an off-campus party in October, officials said. Delaware County deputy prosecuting attorney Judi Calhoun said she is awaiting further information about the extent of the victim's injuries before filing charges.


SGA passes legislation, watches Marine video

With another piece of legislation passed during Wednesday's Student Government Association meeting, students will see e-mails in their mailboxes when Spring Semester begins about important academic dates. The e-mails would be sent five days prior to events such as course requests, course withdrawal periods, registration, Fruesday and applying for graduation to remind students they were approaching.


National statement made by Cardinals' stars

After scoring five touchdowns and leading his team to bowl eligibility, Ball State University quarterback Nate Davis walked into the post-game press conference with a fresh hair cut. An hour before Ball State left the team hotel for the game, Davis' mom called to make sure her son looked his best on national television.

The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics could hardly have asked for more from the football game against University of Toledo. Not only did the team secure bowl eligibility, but ESPN's coverage provided what the athletics department needed most - positive national publicity.


Students gain experience by producing plays

An audience crowds into a small, dark room murmuring and flipping through programs. In front, there is no stage, no screen - just a cozy performance area with room enough for a handful of people. This audience will not enjoy a thundering chorus or a booming accompanying band.


OUR VIEW: Not prepared

It's university policy, and so we will follow the university's policy. Therefore, departments at Ball State University will observe Fruesday and attend Friday classes on Tuesday. At least, that's what representatives said from almost every department that could be reached.


Fraternity puts on Sleep Out

Fraternity members spoke into a microphone and urged walkers and drivers passing by to donate money for the homeless. Ennis Adams, Phi Beta Sigma fraternity social chair, said the fraternity was putting on the 14th annual Sleep Out for the Homeless at the Scramble Light.



Racism still in Indiana, writer says

Racism is still alive in towns across America, said author James Loewen. Loewen spoke Tuesday in Pruis Hall about his most recent book "Sundown Towns" and about America's history of racism and prejudice. Loewen spoke about a high point of racism in America from 1890 to 1940 and explained historical examples of the efforts of groups of white people to drive black people out of communities.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Four players sign intent letters for BSU

Four players signed letters of intent to play for the Ball State University women's basketball team Wednesday. Jade Barber is a 6-foot-2-inch forward from Louisville, Ky. She averaged 12 points and 10.3 rebounds per game as a junior. She is rated as the fifth-best prospect in Kentucky by the Rick Bolus Report.


New Facebook add-on helps with carpools

Ball State University students can use a Facebook application to pair them with students across the nation who are traveling home for Thanksgiving break, helping them cut costs and preserve the environment. Cornell University alumnus John Zimmer said he was part of a group of recent graduates and undergraduate students who formed the "Carpool" application on Facebook.


Business Fellows help YWCA

Business Fellows students plan to use what they have learned in the classroom to help meet the needs of the Muncie YWCA. Jeannine Harrold, program director for the Career Center and project director of the Business Fellows, said the YWCA had an unmet need that required the assistance of trained people.
