Song and dance

Day after day students often start to feel like the world is passing them by while following the same old routine, watching the same television shows. If this is you, then perhaps you would enjoy seeing "Hairspray;" it may even help end the streak of nothingness, at least for the two hours and 30 minutes it will play.

OBJECTIONABLE MATERIAL: Web creates privacy issues

You are being watched. It's not part of some Orwellian nightmare. It's not the U.S. government reading brainwaves through your tinfoil hat. You're being watched because you asked for it. If you have a profile on Facebook or MySpace, or if you make entries on LiveJournal or Xanga, then you might already know that almost anyone with a computer and Internet connection has full access to anything you post, unless you have privacy settings.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Offense struggles as Ball State record drops below .500

In the final game of Hoosier Classic history against Valparaiso University Saturday, coach Tracy Roller told her team to play with a chip on its shoulder after remembering the loss to Temple University earlier in the week. After losing 64-55 to the Crusaders, Ball State University finished the night shooting 40 percent from the floor; Roller said the loss was easy to explain.

SWIMMING AND DIVING: Ball State wins meet for 2nd time in a row

For the second consecutive week, the Ball State University swimming and diving teams won an invitational. The Cardinals' men's and women's teams won the two-day House of Champions Invitational Friday and Saturday. The men's team won with a score of 783 while the women's team won with a score of 795.

Erik Estrada attends Shop with a Cop

As dozens of Muncie police officers walked children through the aisles of Target, the pen of the most famous member of the force was busy signing autographs for fans. Erik Estrada, former star of "CHiPs" and "Armed & Famous," returned to Muncie last week to shadow Muncie police officers and participate in Shop with a Cop on Saturday.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Valpo outshoots Cards

One could have forgiven Ball State University men's basketball coach Billy Taylor for thinking he had stumbled into the movie "Groundhog Day" while watching his team play Saturday night. For the fourth game in a row, Ball State fell behind early, stormed back to be competitive but could not get a victory.

SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL CYNIC: Holiday tunes bring out spirit

One of the most important aspects of the Christmas season is the music. Christmas is the only holiday that has its own brand of music. Sure, Halloween has "The Monster Mash" and New Year's Eve has "Auld Lang Syne." Christmas, however, has a whole slew of holiday music that is only appropriately played during Christmas time.

Ball State to play in International Bowl

After already making history with its first winning record in 11 years, Ball State's football program was officially offered its first bowl invitation since 1996 following today's Mid-American Conference Championship Game. Ball State is set to play Big East opponent Rutgers in the 2008 International Bowl, Ken Hoffman, executive director of both the International Bowl and Motor City Bowl, said from the MAC Championship Game in Detroit.

Fraternities questioned about theft

Delta Tau Delta Fraternity could face penalties from Ball State University and its national headquarters for two of its members suspected involvement in a theft, according to university officials. Lynda Wiley, director of student life, said the university is gathering information to determine whether fraternity members Dustin Koch and James Finn should be held individually accountable for their theft charges, or the fraternity could be held accountable as a whole.

University Senate votes to approve core curriculum

The new core curriculum is one step closer to becoming a reality as University Senate voted Thursday to approve the University Core Curriculum for the 21st Century. Unlike previous discussions about the core throughout the Ball State University governance system, there was little debate about the curriculum among faculty and student senate members.

Franchises to be in student center

L.A. Pittenger Student Center will have more dining options, possibly including franchises such as Starbucks or Taco Bell, because the Student Government Association has succeeded in that area of its executive board's platform SGA President Betsy Mills covered that subject along with many other facets of the U.

All washed up

Sophomore Nat Blue is thankful for the ability to work in Dining Services the maximum 20 hours per week to help him and his single mother pay for his tuition. In Noyer's Retreat, business major Blue and his fellow students work in the dish room for diners, allowing them to eat with clean silverware and plates.

Vendors distribute old drinks

A sample distribution went sour at Ball State University on Thursday when vendors discovered they had been handing out canned coffee beverages that were past their quality expiration date. Cinnabon, Inc. had to cut a product sampling in the Atrium short after it received reports that its espressos and lattes had best-by dates from mid-October.

Few students use voicemail upgrade

Upgrades to Ball State University's voicemail options offer more ways to listen to voicemails. However, while staff and faculty subscribe to the service, it is being overlooked by students. Mark Watters, interim director of telephone and postal services, said the department has seen about 200 new subscribers since the launch of the new features in early November.

BEWILDERED SOCIETY: BSU not just red, white, but also green

While Ball State University salutes its colors - cardinal and white - each time the fight song plays, we might as well throw green in the lyrics, too. No, this has nothing to do with offending the color-blind males wandering campus ("No, dude - I said the one in the purple shirt!"), but rather the institution's heavy interest in environmental sustainability.

THE O'KEY FACTOR: Pick roomies very carefully

Earlier this week, a friend was conveying some frustrations to me (as she traditionally does). This time, it was about the joys of roommates. It seems that one of her roomies was in some hot water with the utility company ... which could result in a lack of hot water for the rest of the residence.

OUR VIEW: Accept responsibility

It's time to take responsibility for our actions and problems by recognizing and addressing them. That means all of us, and not only the two members of Delta Tau Delta fraternity who are suspected of being involved in taking items from the Theta Chi fraternity house.

WHO, ME?: BSU's bowl chances too complicated

After a 7-5 finish, Ball State University football fans are excited for a possible bowl invitation. Each day, new speculation about which game the Cardinals are headed for pops up on Internet message boards. However, confusion reigns as to which game Ball State will be invited to, or even whether it will be invited.

Two fraternity members arrested

A member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity remains in Delaware County jail after he and another member were arrested early Wednesday in connection with a burglary at the Theta Chi fraternity house, according to jail officials. Ball State University police arrested Dustin Koch on suspicion of burglary and theft/possession of stolen property and James Finn on suspicion of theft/possession of stolen property and minor possession/consumption of alcohol, according to jail officials.

OUR VIEW: Beyond face value

Think for yourself. Don't blindly accept what anyone - professors, friends, family, media -¡ tell you. Do research and dig into the truth behind everything. Because things aren't always as clear cut as they might seem, especially when it comes to polls and rankings.
