Sororities consider housing

Fraternity row will have to get a new name now that the Panhellenic Council is discussing having housing for sorority members, Director of Student Life Lynda Wiley said. Former Panhellenic Council President Deanna Pogorelc said the idea of moving sororities into a house was presented last year as a part of a larger plan.

GAs make housing Web movie

Utilities, Internet service and parking costs are a few things Ball State University students should consider when moving off campus, according to the Office of Student Rights and Community Standards. Two graduate assistants who worked for the office recently finished producing a video about what students need to know before moving.

WHO, ME?: Announcer dominates the airwaves

Watching the NFL playoffs last weekend, while drowning my sorrows in the Colts' loss (OK, that's a lie), I came to an inescapable conclusion. Joe Buck is everywhere. Yes, the ubiquitous Fox Sports headline act, he of "Slam-a-lam-a-ding-dong!" fame, is out of control and cannot be stopped.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Cards capture Eagles 71-64

var uslide_show_id = "e21155a5-b9ae-42fb-95d2-991a05532cdb";var slideshowwidth = "350";var linktext = ""; With three minutes left in Tuesday's game against Eastern Michigan University, the Ball State University women's basketball team used a 9-3 run to cement a 71-64 victory. The win not only continued Ball State's hot start to the Mid-American Conference season, but also continued its trend of finding success down the stretch in close games.

Worth a raise

Since the football season's conclusion, Ball State University athletics director Tom Collins negotiated a possible contract extension that could increase coach Brady Hoke's base salary by a minimum of $24,599. Collins said Tuesday he would like Hoke to be paid in the top half of the Mid-American Conference, which would require a minimum 15 percent pay raise from last year's $164,289 base salary.

OUR VIEW: 'A' for effort

A video posted to the Student Rights and Community Standards off-campus living Web site strives to make students think critically when looking for off-campus housing. Despite noble intentions, the video missed a few points such as safety and lease signing pointers that would have greatly benefitted students.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Gaining confidence

To hear first-year Ball State University coach Billy Taylor tell it, junior forward Anthony Newell's foot injury that kept him out of nine non-conference games was a blessing in disguise for the Cardinals. Not to say that Taylor doesn't wish Newell had been available.

GREAT WHITE HYPE: Big conference takes another good coach

If a coach in the Mid-American Conference has a couple good years, it is only a matter of time before a larger conference swoops in offering twice the salary to skip town. That was the case last week when Ball State University soccer coach Michelle Salmon accepted the head coach vacancy at the University of Cincinnati, a member of the Big East.

THINK TO EXIST: 'Juno' shows teen's strong will, strength

"Like the city in Alaska?" Not quite, but "Juno," starring Ellen Page and Michael Cera, is a film every romantic comedy enthusiast should see. Even though 2007 produced such films like "Waitress" and "Knocked Up," portraying women bearing unwanted offspring, "Juno" is arguably the finest and most eloquent of its competition.

Fraternity members lose charter

Members of the Zeta Beta Tau fraternity are looking for a new place to live after their national organization pulled the chapter's charter. President Mitch France said the members were told about the decision Thursday night. He said the charter's revoking resulted from the chapter failing to meet the Ball State University all-men's average GPA of 2.

OUR VIEW: Greek image

Once again the actions of one fraternity is overshadowing the positive aspects of greek life. The improved image of the greek community is being tarnished because some members could not keep up their GPAs. Zeta Beta Tau fraternity got its charter suspended by the national headquarters for failing to meet Ball State University's all-men's GPA of 2.

MLK Day events increase

Ball State University students and administrators will join Muncie community members to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Tuesday at a "Music of the Civil Rights Era" concert. Charles Payne, assistant provost for diversity and director of Diversity Policy Institute, said the concert, which will be at 8 p.

Student charged with two class A misdemeanors

Charges have been filed against one of the suspects in the November break in and theft of the Theta Chi fraternity house. Ronda Defrees, investigator for the Muncie city court, said Dustin Koch was charged with conversion and trespassing, both class A misdemeanors.

Around the MAC

Newell named MAC West Player of the Week Ball State University junior forward Anthony Newell was named the Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week by the league office Monday. It is the second week in a row that a Cardinal earned the honor after senior guard Peyton Stovall earned it last week.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Freshman selected as MAC West Division Player of the Week

Entering the first two games of Mid-American Conference play, few would have predicted that Ball State University's leading scorer would be a freshman. After averaging 20 points, 7.5 rebounds and leading the women's basketball team to a 2-0 start to open the conference season, Emily Maggert was selected by the conference office as the MAC West Division player of the week Monday.

SPEAK SOFTLY: Bush hatred now void

There will never be an argument made that these last seven years in American politics have not been controversial. President Bush has been forced to confront a series of challenges that rival the challenges presented to many of our former Chief Executives.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Undefeated in MAC

Faced with a 12-point deficit after allowing 14 unanswered points in the second half of Saturday's game at Northern Illinois University, Ball State University coach Lisa McDonald called a timeout to encourage her players. "I told them we did not drive [to Northern Illinois] for five hours to do anything other than win," McDonald said.
