MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cardinals get road win in California

For coach Joel Walton, Friday's win proved a victory last season against at team from the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation wasn't a fluke. The Ball State University men's volleyball team beat the University of Pacific for two consecutive seasons. However, this season the win came on the road as the Cardinals won 30-23, 30-26, 28-30, 30-25.

The Ball State University women's tennis team will travel to Kalamazoo, Mich., this weekend for a pair of matches against Big East opponents DePaul and Marquette universities. The Cardinals (2-0) have not played a match since their 7-0 sweep of Wright State University on Jan.


Thieves break into Village bar

The owner of the Locker Room is offering a $500 cash reward for information about suspects involved in a burglary at the bar. Manager Brandon Newman said the break-in happened between 4:30 and 8:00 a.m. Wednesday. According to police reports, unknown suspects climbed gas pipes to the roof and entered the building by using a cinder block to smash a plywood-covered skylight.


Moving on up

Walking into a white house with greek letters in the top left window, the room to the right has a cozy feel. Calming red and brown colors fill the room. The shuffling of feet is heard through the house as people go from room to room checking out the decor.



Downtown prepares for Muncie Gras

Some downtown businesses will relish in the boost of sales thanks to Muncie Gras customers, while others will provide more of a refuge from the festivities Saturday. Cheryl Crowder, program manager of downtown development, said this year's Muncie Gras will "turn Walnut Street into Bourbon Street.


MEN'S BASKETBALL: Morale stays high for Cards despite losses

Despite three straight losses and a 3-16 overall record, the Ball State University men's basketball team thinks its season is far from over. "We're not down," senior guard Peyton Stovall said. "Nobody likes to lose, but we've just got to continue to work in practice and get better.

Slightly less than a year ago, Kelsey Corbin's primary obligation was to handle the point guard duties for Ball State University's women's basketball team. Corbin, the Cardinals' lone senior in the starting lineup last season, tended to those responsibilities, averaging 12.


SWIMMING AND DIVING: Women prepare; men on sidelines

When Ohio University visits Ball State University on Saturday, the Cardinals' women will have a chance to avenge last year's loss to the Bobcats. The men's team will not. Ohio's men's swimming and diving team defeated Ball State 145-98 last year at the Lewellen Aquatic Center.



TRACK AND FIELD: Cardinals to travel to Bloomington

Although the Mid-American Conference Championships are a month away, the Ball State University track and field team is already getting accustomed to the routine of the meet. The Cardinals travel to Bloomington this weekend for the Indiana Invitational, a two-day event that features a preliminary round Friday and a final round Saturday.

MEN'S TENNIS: Doubleheader awaits Ball State on Saturday

After playing two ranked opponents in its first four dual matches, the Ball State University men's tennis team will take a break from top 25 talent when it plays a doubleheader Saturday. The Cardinals face Valparaiso University and the University of Indianapolis back-to-back in the first of two double-dual-match meets of their spring schedule.


Faculty opposes gay marriage ban

The Ball State University Faculty Council voted to oppose the proposed gay marriage amendment Senate Joint Resolution 7. Beckie Adams, a professor in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences, said the Faculty Council was strongly opposed to the state constitution amendment.



Immersion project kicks off

About 50 Ball State University students involved in immersive learning experiences joined together to kick off a project Wednesday in L.A. Pittenger Student Center. Rodger Smith, associate director at the Center for Media Design, said students from several departments have been involved in the immersion projects.


University to purchase boiler

The south edge of campus will have a $44.9 million building, which most students will never enter. Jim Lowe, director of engineering and operations, said Ball State University would replace several coal-fired water boilers with a single unit. The new boiler will stand between 90 and 100 feet tall and its expected completion date is Fall 2010, Lowe said.


WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Cards lose in overtime after second half rally

After recovering from an 11-point deficit with four minutes to play, Ball State University's women's basketball team ran out of steam in overtime of Wednesday's game at Ohio University. The Bobcats scored the first nine points in the extra period, and the Cardinals never pulled within one possession down the stretch, dropping their second game of the Mid-American Conference season, 88-82.


Duplain testifies, defends decisions

INDIANAPOLIS - After more than a week of eyewitness accounts and expert analyses, Robert Duplain took the stand Wednesday expressing remorse but at the same time saying he had no choice but to kill Michael McKinney. "I feel horrible for what's happened," the former Ball State University police officer said. "It's a tragedy for this family. It's a tragedy for my family. I wish it didn't have to happen. Unfortunately, it's part of the job. Going into police work, it's a very real possibility ... My actions were dictated by the actions of Mr. McKinney."

Down by double digits for a majority of the second half, Ball State University stormed back to within five points with 1:02 remaining, but couldn't finish the comeback falling 63-53 to Bowling Green State University Wednesday. "Our effort wasn't terrific tonight," Ball State coach Billy Taylor said.


THE RIGHT WORD: Candidates use patriotism as political tool

As I sit here watching political commentary for the presidential election in November, I cannot help but notice that somehow every candidate makes it clear they are patriotic. I must ask myself where this concept would possibly fit in when it comes to lowering taxes, reducing the size of our government, building a stronger military or even serving the American people.
