OUR VIEW: Replacing Doc's on Dill will be difficult for Village

The chances of the Village growing in popularity for Ball State University students just suffered another major blow. Doc's owner Mike Martin announced this weekend that Doc's on Dill, located on North Dill Street, has opened its doors for the final time and is now closed.



Tanning salon to open in the Village in July

The owner of Greek's Pizzeria in the Village has decided to branch out from pizza to try his luck in the tanning business. Andy Goth, a Muncie native who bought Greek's from the original owner five years ago, is preparing to open Sunsations Tanning on July 6.


Ball State holds its largest conference in school history

The largest conference to ever be held at Ball State University is beginning today. Ball State will host the Indiana United Methodist Church's annual conference Thursday through Sunday, bringing about 2,500 to 3,000 United Methodists to campus. Rita Stewart, director of conferences and special events at Ball State, helped to coordinate the event.


FOOTBALL: Offensive line coach uses Twitter to target recruits

As technology continues to evolve, recruiting techniques follow the same curve. Ball State University football assistant coach Jason Eck is trying to stay ahead of the pack with his Twitter account. "Hopefully, it can set me apart from other coaches recruiting in the same area as I am," Eck said.



Teachers College dean Weaver honored at reception

More than 100 faculty members, students and supporters gathered Wednesday to congratulate Roy Weaver, the retiring dean of the Teachers College, on his 29-year career as a leader and scholar at Ball State University. Weaver, who has been dean for 16 years, is best known for his initiatives, including implementing electronic portfolios in the classroom and heading the initiative for Ball State's 35 charter schools around the state.


WOMEN'S GOLF: Golfer disqualified from national tournament because of traffic jam

After finishing the first round of the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship with an 83, for 11 over par, Ball State University golfer Kristtini Cain was disqualified for missing her second round tee time. Ball State women's golf coach Katherine Mowat said Cain missed her tee time because of traffic.


More bang for your buck at Muncie shops

The economy's effect on summer budgets may cause some students to rethink what to buy. Luckily, there are a couple stores in Muncie students can go to for their warm weather clothing options. On just about any sunny afternoon, you can find people playing basketball at Westside Park. This particular location is favored by people because of the competition between players and friends and also the interaction on the court. Some have been coming to Westside Park for years. Construction worker not seriously injured after accident at Sigma Phi Epsilon house

A construction worker was brought to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after a construction accident at about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Ball State University. Bradley Rogers, an employee of Rhino Trucking & Excavating Inc., was tearing down the former Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity house at 1515 Riverside Ave.

BSU receives three-year research grant

Ball State University will be receiving a grant for more than $210,000 to study diabetes, endocrinology and related metabolic research. U.S. Congressman Mike Pence made the announcement Monday on behalf of the Department of Health and Human Services. "I want to commend Ball State University on earning this grant award for neurological research," Pence stated in a press release.


College leaders urge Indiana lawmakers not to cut higher education budget

INDIANAPOLIS-¡ - Representatives of state universities testified Tuesday morning in front of a conference committee tasked with negotiating a compromise between the House and Senate versions of the state budget. The House Democrat's version of the budget contains a 2 percent increase for higher education.


Ball State to set 2009-10 tuition prices in late July

Ball State University students will have to wait another month to find out what they will be paying for tuition. The Ball State University Board of Trustees will likely set tuition for the 2009-2010 school year at its meeting July 24, Anita Kelsey, the board's recording secretary, said Wednesday.

After being at Ball State University for less than four months, offensive lineman coach Jason Eck has already started to distinguish himself from every other coach at university - at least in terms of using technology. Of the more than 10 Ball State coaches and assistant coaches, Eck is the only Ball State football coach to have jumped on board the latest fad in social Web sites, Twitter.


Dean of Teacher's College to be honored at event

The dean of Ball State University's Teachers College will be honored with a reception from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. today at the Museum of Art. The event, which will be held in the Sculpture Garden at the museum, will mark Roy Weaver's approaching retirement as dean.


GEOTHERMAL: Contractor named for project; first phase to begin in July

Construction for Ball State's geothermal heat pump system can finally begin, according to an announcement made last week that awarded a contractor the first leg of the project. Messer Construction, also the contractor for the renovation of the L.A. Pittenger Student Center, received the bid for the first location of construction.
