Ball State official pleased with new Indiana state budget

Despite concerns of the new state budget cutting funding for universities across the state, fears have been put to rest for members of the Ball State University Board of Trustees. Relief came after the approval of the new Indiana state budget that was passed Tuesday, which will not cut any higher education funding despite original proposals for about a 4 percent decrease.

Ball State upgrades its Blackboard site

Students at Ball State University will be able to customize their use of the online application Blackboard when it is updated for the Fall Semester. Version 9, also called Blackboard Learn, will offer students and instructors new features like blogging, bookmarking and a customizable homepage.


Jeremy Hazelbaker signs with the Red Sox

Former Ball State University center fielder Jeremy Hazelbaker signed a contract with the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday, ending any chance he would return for his senior season. Hazelbaker was drafted in the fourth round of the MLB First-Year Player Draft on June 16.


OUR VIEW: John Fisher's work at Ball State should not be overlooked

No one has to look far on the Ball State University campus to see the legacy John Fisher left at this school. There are no recently constructed buildings named after him. No popular statues or monuments to immortalize him. Few current students at the university probably knew anything about the man.



King of the castle

Tom Kinghorn's presence will remain at Ball State University long after he retires from his position. A residence hall at Ball State, which will be completed by the fall of 2010, has been named Thomas J. Kinghorn Hall in his honor,. Kinghorn recently stepped down from his position as vice president for business affairs and treasurer, which he held since 1980.

The newest addition to the Ball State residence halls now has a name, Thomas J. Kinghorn Hall. The new building was named after the university's vice president for business affairs and treasurer who will step down from his position Tuesday.


Ball State waits as debate about Indiana state budget continues to rage

INDIANAPOLIS - The mood at the state house has become more pessimistic as the General Assembly nears its deadline to pass a budget. Indiana faces a government shutdown if the Indiana General Assembly does not pass a state budget by Wednesday. Indiana's Constitution forbids the state from spending money from the treasury without approval by the General Assembly.

FOOTBALL: Future Cardinal helps Team USA in Junior World Championship

The USA Football Junior National team opened the inaugural Junior World Championship with a 78-0 win over Team France. The championship boasts teams from eight countries, spanning four continents and is taking place at Fawcett Stadium, beside the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.


PARADOX OF A PLAID SWEATER: Hate crimes remain major world issue

"You want my weapons - this is how you'll get them. The Holocaust is a lie," reads James Wenneker Von Brunn's notebook. The notebook is filled with angry anti-Semitic statements that reflected the beliefs of an 88-year-old white supremacist. The notebook was found inside Brunn's car.



Teachers College dean's retirement leaves lasting legacy

For the past 16 years as Dean of the Teachers College, Roy Weaver has led Ball State to be ranked among the top education departments in the country through the development and implementation of many nationally-recognized programs. However because Weaver decided to step down as dean, tomorrow will be his last day in the position.


Officials say recent Muncie police cuts won't hurt Ball State

Ball State University remains safe, even as the city of Muncie cuts police and fire services in a bid to plug a budget shortfall of $3.8 million, campus and city officials say. "We're still going to provide fire protection to the university, and I believe we supplement the police department at Ball State," Mayor Sharon McShurley said.

THOUGHTS FROM THE JOHN: Iran citizens should have freedoms

In all the darkest recesses of Iran, agents of American media and the BBC are pressing Iranians into a state of protest and civil unrest. Propaganda abounds. The government murder of a young woman in Tehran, Neda Agha-Soltan, was staged, either by Western media or agents of rival candidate Mir Hussein Moussavi to light a fire of insurrection and revolt against the rightfully-elected leader and perhaps against the Ayatollah himself.


Friday Nite Filmworks sets its Fall Semester schedule

Every Friday night throughout the Fall Semester Ball State University students will be able to enjoy blockbuster movies for free. Friday Nite Filmworks is a program sponsored by the University Program Board. President of the University Program Board Dillon Kimmel said Friday Nite Filmworks is a great program sponsored by the university that does not involve partying or alcohol consumption.


Local music venue closes in the Village

Doc's on Dill played its last song Saturday after less than one year in business. The local music venue opened in the Village in October 2008 as an extension of Doc's Music Hall, located in downtown Muncie. Owner Mike Martin said the goal of Doc's Music Hall, which has been open since May 2006, is to make and share music with the Muncie community.
