THOUGHTS FROM THE JOHN: Makeup is a joke played on women

A 12-year-old girl and her mother stand in the makeup aisle at a Walgreen's drug store comparing shades of lipstick and mascara. The girl's mother gives pointers on how to apply different products for different applications and different looks. She has no idea she is infecting our culture with a poison that we may never be able to leach out.



Muncie City Council signs resolution against Rep. Pence earmarks stance

Muncie City Council adopted a resolution last week asking U.S. Rep. Mike Pence to reconsider his one-year ban on earmark requests. The resolution was passed in a 6-3 vote last week. Congressman Pence's current stance on earmark requests prevents Ball State University from continuing its renovation of McKinley and Riverside avenues, Phil Sachtleben, vice president of governmental relations at Ball State, said.


New Ball State student trustee Vauter ready for first board meeting

A newly elected student member of Ball State University's Board of Trustees was announced earlier this week. Junior finance and economics major Nicole Vauter said she will jump right in at her first meeting, where she will be voting on the budget and tuition rates for the upcoming school year.


FOOTBALL: 2008 Ball State, Western Michigan game to re-air on ESPNU

Saturday morning at midnight, ESPNU will be replaying the football game from Nov. 25 between Ball State University and Western Michigan University. The game was originally aired on ESPN 2. Ball State beat Western Michigan 45-22 at Scheumann Stadium and, in doing so, secured a perfect 12-0 regular season.



Muncie City Council discusses income tax rate increase

A resolution discussed at Monday night's city council meeting could affect the amount of taxes employees in Muncie will pay starting in 2010. The resolution, which proposed an income tax rate increase of 1.25 percent to provide funding for public safety, was tabled at Monday's meeting to be further discussed at the next city council meeting in August.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cards release ticket packages for 2009 season

The Ball State athletics department announced Tuesday that 2009 season tickets for the Cardinals are now on sale. Season packages include tickets to Ball State's 11 regular season home matches and admission to all six matches in the Active Ankle Challenge.



Construction vehicle at Ball State goes up in flames

Traffic and construction near Kinghorn Hall were halted Wednesday morning after an truck carrying asphalt burst into flames. Although the official report of the incident wasn't available as of Wednesday night, Gene Burton, director of public safety at Ball State University, said the fire was caused by a propane tank that was on the back of the truck.


OUR VIEW: Just go for it, take an adventure

It is a crazy idea. We all have them and hope they come true one day. At some point in everyone's life, a thought pops into your head about doing something completely out of the ordinary at some point in your life. Ball State University graduate student Jason Glassburn had his and he's now living the thought out - spending his summer and fall walking from coast-to-coast across the United States.


Ball State proposes tuition increase for Fall Semester

Students will pay about $330 more for a Ball State University education next year if the Board of Trustees approves a proposed increase in tuition and fees. Under the plan proposed by the university, tuition will increase by 3.26 percent, which is about $228 per year for in-state students.


2,600 miles on foot

There's not many people who think walking 2,600 miles across the country with 55 pounds of equipment strapped to your back sounds like a good way to spend a summer, but to one Ball State University student, it sounded like the perfect opportunity to have an adventure.



SCENE SELECTION: Dillinger film director sets new trends

Crime sagas are the staple of pure American cinema. "The Godfather," "Scarface," "Heat," "The Departed" and many, many more romanticize illicit actions and make murderers and other criminals personable. Director Michael Mann adds another film to that list this summer with his new film "Public Enemies.

Downtown Muncie is home to several art studios and galleries featuring both local and regional artists. These galleries provide the community with new exhibits, showcasing various types of artistic works each month. Many different do-it-yourself art opportunities are also offered for those looking to embrace their own creativity.


MEN'S GOLF: Cards make cut at Brickyard

A former member of the Ball State University golf team is in the top 15 After the second round of play at the Indiana Open Championship at the Brickyard Crossing Golf Course in Speedway. Jamie Broce finished the first two days of the competition at two under par, which was good enough for 15th place.

July Fourth arrests are up in Delaware County

Highly publicized DUI patrols netted more than a dozen drivers in the state police district that includes Muncie last week - a period that some in law enforcement regard as the start of their busy season. State troopers arrested 14 people over the July Fourth holiday weekend in the Redkey District, which includes Delaware and four other counties.
