MUNCIE, Ind. — On April 5, wheels gave way to footsteps at the corner of Wheeling Avenue and McGalliard Road. What is normally one of Muncie’s busiest intersections turned into a hub for local protesters demanding action– or rather– inaction.
“We’re trying to send a message to our government to leave us alone, to stop trying to destroy our lives,” said Thomas Kirby. “Stand up, fight back.”
It was one of over 1,000 events held across the country as part of the “Hands Off!” movement– a protest pushing back on federal policies.
From tariffs to healthcare, protesters carried signs for rights that they say are under attack. And their message was clear: Hands off.
“We’re having our rights taken away beneath our feet when there are so many more topics and issues at hand that deserve to be dealt with,” said Aura Aurora.
According to a representative from Muncie Resists, an estimated 500 people were in attendance. Included in that number was Joseph Souza, who was arrested just weeks prior at a Ball State Trustees Meeting.
Despite being charged with disorderly conduct, Souza doesn’t plan on stopping his fight anytime soon.
“People who speak up against this fascist government now have retaliation against them. We’re ready to face that and come out the next day and smile to our neighbors,” said Souza.
The mix of car horns and chants was enough to slow traffic– and just maybe, start a conversation.
More rallies under the “Hands Off!” movement are expected in the coming weeks. Whether the message reaches the Oval Office remains to be seen.
