Ball State will be implementing a new textbook affordability program called Ball State First Day, in partnership with Barnes & Noble. Beginning in Fall 2025, students will receive required course materials at a reduced cost. It will be billed with tuition and fees, and students will automatically be enrolled upon registration. Students will be notified about their required course material one month before classes begin, and they can select their delivery preference.

In a press release, Ball State said this will help make education more accessible to those who struggle to afford required course materials. Students can also opt out of this program if they wish to acquire their textbooks on their own. Certain financial aid can cover the costs as well, depending on the amount and type of aid students receive.

In total, Ball State First Day’s cost is $22.75 per credit hour, or $273 per 12 credit hours. These charges will simply be added to students’ eBill to make payment smoother. Ball State First Day covers all required textbooks, eTextbooks, lab manuals, e-books, and online learning tools, including but not limited to WileyPLUS, MyLab, WebAssign, and Connect.

This program does not cover items that cannot be returned or reused, including lab goggles, dissection kids, molecular model kits, and nursing kits.

Barnes & Noble will be hosting a Ball State First Day event at a time yet to be decided. Faculty members can join upcoming listening sessions on Microsoft Teams to learn more about the program, with links available in their email. Students and faculty can visit the FAQ’s webpage for more information about the program.
