MUNCIE, Ind—Since 1941, Lowery’s Home Made Candies has proudly served the Muncie community with quality candies. The business continues to make its chocolate the old-fashioned way, hand-dipped.
Store owner Charles Joseph always prioritizes the customer, which has contributed to the business’s success.
“Anything that you want, we can do it in a heartbeat,” said Joseph. “Whereas our competitors are going to be sticking to their traditional pieces.”
The shop has a variety of chocolates and candies year-round, which makes it stand out in the chocolate business.
As a small business, Lowery’s has faced challenges, such as losing supplies to big companies that provide them with quality ingredients and supplies.
“It gets harder and harder every year going into the business,” said Joseph. “Like this year, we went to place our wrapping order, and they went out of business. Which was not on our bingo card for this season,” said Charles.
Despite these challenges, the community support has helped the shop continue to overcome its supplier struggles, especially when the coronavirus pandemic hit, which negatively affected the small business community.
“We had plans of just shutting the doors and seizing operation, but our amazing customers were literally calling us and asking to come get candy,” said Joseph. “Our amazing local customers were the ones who came and waited in the parking lot between 45 minutes to an hour just to get candy,” said Joseph.
With a long history behind the business, Lowery’s is committed to a lasting future. Lowery’s not only serves the local community, but also offers worldwide shipping.
“Being that home-friendly store, everybody’s got fond memories of Lowery’s,” said Joseph. “You know, we are starting to see a lot of customers come in that are second or even third generations themselves that talk about how their grandparents came in, so it’s kind of that warm feeling you get when you think about.”
Lowery’s plans to continue growing in their business and creating more quality candies as the year goes on.
