Floats and florals: Students celebrate the coming of spring

Students drink mocktails and make flower arrangements at North West Hall’s Let's Bloom: Bring on Spring event.

MUNCIE, Ind. — Root beer floats and Shirley Temples were among the treats served to students to celebrate the arrival of spring. On March 31, the North West Hall’s Let's Bloom: Bring on Spring event had students drinking mocktails and making flower bouquets. One of the people celebrating was first-year CAP student Henry Baas.

“I thought ‘flowers are really nice’ and I thought about my girlfriend to help me pick some out,” Baas said. “I like the smell. I really like the look of them. I think they're very colorful, and I like that they're alive and they make the dorm smell nice.”

Baas says that events like these are important because they build a sense of community and provide a safe space on campus.

“These are great. I think we should run these things more often– maybe weekly,” Baas said.

Nia Townsend, the dorm's Assistant Residential Learning Coordinator, helped the hall council organize the event. In her two years in the role, she said it went well.

“I think the residents enjoyed it. I feel like we had a good turnout… I mean, we're out of ice cream; we're out of flowers pretty much,” Townsend said.

Townsend says that dorm events are good for students to decompress.

“I think that this program is definitely helpful to kind of like ease the stress and kind of like let  the residents just experience having some fun with some of their fellow friends and classmates. Then also like just being able to kind of relax and do something fun for a night,” Townsend said.

North West Hall Council is preparing for its end-of-year event on April 14th with the North Neighborhood. They are planning to have Kona Ice, Auntie Anne's Pretzels, games, and tie-dyeing.
