MUNCIE, Ind. — After Alex Maloney joined his father's coaching staff in 2023, the Ball State Cardinals have had back-to-back 35-plus winning seasons.
“They’re both Maloneys, they will both be pretty similar,” Blake Bevis, junior 1st baseman for the Cardinals, said.
Rich Maloney, the head coach of Ball State baseball, has been at Ball State for his second stint since 2013. Alex Maloney, the son of Rich Maloney, is the recruiting coordinator as well as a hitting coach on his father's staff.
“He has been a big part of this program, I mean, when he grew up. When he was a baby, he was here, he didn't remember nothing,” Rich Maloney said.
Alex was six months old when Rich Maloney first accepted the Ball State job. Fast-forward to 2014, and Rich is on his second stint with the Cardinals, and Alex is now playing for his dad. Now, Alex and Rich are leading the Cardinals.
“...to coach under your father, it's truly a family affair, and we are very lucky to experience this all together,” Alex Maloney said.
Alex can't think about Ball State enough, as he met his wife at Ball State University. He continues to grow as a person and as a coach, and no better person to do it under than the guy he gets to call dad.
“It’s always good to have your son by your side… he's been in the program, and he knows how it works and he has to figure out he can do things on his own,” Rich Maloney said.
Alex is continuing to learn, grow, and be more vocal as a coach. He hopes to become a head coach on his own someday.
“This program means a lot to our family and we just want to continue the success on,” Alex Maloney said.
The Cardinals look to continue chasing their goals and build a program no one can overlook.
