MUNCIE, Ind. – The Social Dance Society club teaches many forms of dancing here at Ball State University. They explore all forms of dancing from Latin to Swing to Ballroom.

There might be some stepping on toes, but instead of judgment it’s filled with laughter and the opportunity to try again. Most of the students that are part of the club didn’t have any dance experience. Even the group leaders were the same way, like Vice President Claire Mills.

“We have professionals who will come in here and help guide you. A lot of us here don’t have experience when it comes to dancing. You will not be alone, but it’s a really fun atmosphere,” explained Mills.

However, some members have had previous experience within the dance world. Anaika Sharlow, who has a ballet and contemporary background, was challenged by the freedom that comes with the various social dances.

“Things not being choreographed is like very jarring to me kind of thing,” said Sharlow. “But I think it’s really improved my skills as a general dancer, and being able to pick up on things faster and be able to work off of other people.”

Nerves about starting something new can prevent others from trying something new like dancing. Some students say they don’t even know where to start. Dance instructor, Michelle Owen said her favorite thing about the club is how accessible it is.

“We have had wheelchair users, we have had students who their first language wasn’t English,” said Owen. “Dance is absolutely a universal language and it’s for everybody.”

Dance in general doesn’t just provide new experiences, but provides new opportunities.

“Some of my biggest career opportunities came because of the connections I had through dancing, which was not what I was expecting,” said Owen. “Which ended up being better than any career networking event I have ever went to.”

The club has not only brought a community together but also new experiences for everyone to take away. Everyone comes from different backgrounds and learning styles. There is a different outcome for all, but they all learn together, one dance at a time.

If you’re interested in checking out the club itself, they have meetings on Monday from seven to nine p.m. It is located at the Student Center in room 310.
